High school class to host 5K

Mr. Muckleroy’s Prime Time class from Canfield High School is hosting a 5k walk/run on Oct. 27 to benefit The Water Project. It will take place at The Canfield Fairgrounds in front of the Colonial Inn building. Registration will start 8:30 a.m. and the walk/run will start promptly at 10 a.m.

Canfield senior, Jessica Houser first approached her Prime Time class earlier in the year to raise donations for The Water Project.

“My entire class like the idea and we began to plan a 5k” said Houser.

The race will help support The Water Project on their mission to provide safe, accessibly drinking water throughout Africa. The non-profit organization has had tremendous success this year having completed 213 projects. The project is saving countless amounts of lives from waterborne illnesses by building new wells. Access to clean water improves multiple aspects of life: education, health, hunger and poverty.

Children are able to remain at school throughout the day where before they would have to travel several miles to obtain water for their families. Clean water reduces the spreading of disease and sickness, allowing individuals to get back on their feet and be able to go to work. Having ample access to water lessens the percentage of people who are hungry due to having less crop loss. The purpose of serving communities in need is to break the cycle of poverty and rebuild.

The classes’ goal is to raise $1,500 to assist in refurbishing a well to increase the lifestyle of many individuals.

“We hope to have a large group participate on the 27th. You can send donations and registrations to my house or just show up the day of the 5k,” said Houser.

Pre registration entries can be mailed to The Houser’s at 5871 Cherrywood Drive, Boardman, Ohio 44512. Include your name, address, email and phone. Checks can be made payable to The Water Project.
