Trunk or Treat to be Oct. 27

The Canfield United Methodist Church is hosting its annual Trunk or Treat event on Oct. 27 from 4–5:30 p.m. Children and their families are invited to come in costume and enjoy an afternoon of fun and games. Members of the church will decorate their trunks and automobiles and pass out candy. The Canfield UMC youth group are leading games.Refreshments will be provided. Canfield UMC is located at 27 S. Drive through chicken dinner

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, is having a drive through chicken dinner from 4 p.m. until it is sold out on Nov. 7. The cost is $7 and includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Library to close for holidays

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving, Nov. 28.

Swap coupons at the library

If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop by between 9 a.m. and noon at the Canfield library Nov. 15 and 16 to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons or learning new tips from other coupon-clippers.

Check your blood pressure

Get your blood pressure checked at the Canfield library on Nov. 19 from 1-3 p.m. Hosted by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association.

Nook for novices and pros

If you are new to Nook or new to borrowing eBooks from the library for your well-used Nook, bring your device to the Canfield library on Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. and they will show you how to find and download eBooks from the library’s Digital Catalog on the website. Kindle class set

Make rainbow loom bracelets

Children in grades 4 and up, are invited to the Rainbow Loom craft program on Nov. 26 at 3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Rainbow Loom bracelets are fun, unique and great to give away as presents. Each session is limited to the first 12 tweens and teens who sign up.

Beginners will be walked through the single pattern bracelet, but templates will be provided for loomers with more experience. Warning: Rainbow Loom Kits contain small rubber bands and sharp points.

Celebrate American Indian awareness month

Celebrate American Indian Awareness Month with the Redhawk Native American Cultural Society on Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library.

Gene Allison, a member of the Red Hawk American Indian Cultural Society, will appear in full regalia, share artifacts and stories and answer questions. Fun and educational for the whole family.

Read tales to tails

Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence, and encourages a love of reading at the Canfield library on Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m..

Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs.

Lego my library on Tuesday

Children, age 6 and up, can create Lego designs at the Canfield library on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided.

Children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver can join the Canfield library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development, and motivate language learning on Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. Adults and kids, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

MCCTC students open salon

Cosmetology students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center opened The Salon at MCCTC to the public. Salon hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:15-10:30 a.m. Appointments are recommended. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, perms, hair color, manicures and hair removal. All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $5. New to the salon this year is a retail space with Paul Mitchell product, shellac manicures and a redesigned salon space.

Audubon Society hosts birdwatching talk

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Birding as a Window Into Nature” on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Larry Richardson, retired director of Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, will entertain with the discoveries he made while birdwatching. Canfield residents earn degrees

Canfield residents Victoria Wirtz (Bachelor of Arts in interior design) and Alannah Kutan (Bachelor of Science in dietetics-didactic program) graduated from The University of Akron in summer 2013.

New location opens Oct. 19

Canfield resident performs in YSU play

Carly Magnuson of Canfield, a junior at Youngstown State University, is a member of the cast of University Theater’s production of “Tribunal.” Carly is majoring in Musical Theater and plays the role of Hannelore Schneider.

The play in YSU’s Spotlight Theater will run Oct. 26 and 27. Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. while the Sunday matinee performances begin at 2 p.m.

The play is written by YSU alum Mark Milo Kessler and is directed by YSU alum Tracy Schuler Vivo.

Tickets may be purchased by calling the University Theater Box Office at 330-941-3105. Tickets are free for YSU students with ID; $10 for adults; $5 for senior citizens, YSU faculty and staff and high school and college students from other universities, Penguin Club members and YSU alumni. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue parking deck for a nominal fee.

Mooney to host Veteran’s Day assembly

Cardinal Mooney will host a Veteran’s Day assembly on Nov. 11. The assembly will feature Marine Sgt. Tod Schuller, a 2005 graduate and Afghan war veteran, as the main speaker.

All veterans, Cardinal Mooney alumni, parents and friends are invited to attend the ceremony, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Those seeking more information should call the Cardinal Mooney alumni office at 330-788-5113.

Ursuline Center offers mini retreat

The Ursuline Center is offering an Advent Mini-Retreat “What Do I Most Want?” for those interested in preparing for the celebration of Christmas in a way that allows them to anticipate the birth of Christ with a renewed sense of discipleship.

The retreat will be Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. until noon in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel, located at 4250 Shields Road. The group will use a contemplative method of praying with Scripture in order to connect participants’ stories with the great stories of Faith. A light brunch will be included. The donation is $15.

Annual fruit sale to begin Nov. 5

The Canfield Band Parents organization is once again sponsoring its annual Fresh Fruit Sale starting Nov. 5. Band students in grades 5-12 are now selling fruit – including Florida oranges and grapefruit, Washington apples, D’Anjou pears and more. An assortment of packages is available. Students will also be selling four varieties of New York-style cheesecake. All orders will arrive Dec. 14 for delivery. All proceeds from the sale benefit the Canfield Band Programs.

Kiwanis Club to host swiss steak dinner

The Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club will hosts its annual swiss steak dinner Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield.

Cost is $10.50 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4-9 and three and under are free.

Tickets can be purchased at the door and takeouts are available.

Caring family portrait sessions offered

Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography

The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.

Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.

Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.

For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

Church to host women’s retreat

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 South Canfield Road in Canfield, will host a Women’s Retreat from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m Nov. 2. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the cost is $20, which includes breakfast breads, coffee, lunch and prizes. In the morning, Rev. Suzanne Hill will speak on sharing your faith. In the afternoon, Joanne Smisko will give her testimony, titled “Life is a Quilt - Putting the Pieces Together.” She will also display some of her handmade quilts. Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 26

Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 11-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.

Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, 50-50 raffle, games, and goodies. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

Casino trip to be Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Donate food items

Canfield Operation Blessing distributes food at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. every third Thursday of the month. In order to continue to help local families in need, the church is asking for donations of non-perishable goods at the following locations during the month of August: Canfield Police Department, Canfield Fire Department, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, The Broad Street Diner, Bob and Chuck Eddy Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Fiat and Firm Fitness and Spray Tan (Hilltop Plaza). Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display.

Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
