Library closes for holidays

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving, Nov. 28.

Swap jigsaw puzzles

If you are done with your jigsaw puzzle and want to try another, join other jigsaw enthusiasts and swap puzzles at the Boardman library on Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC.

The Boardman Friends of the Library meeting will be Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. Actress Carol Weakland will present “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.”

Screen your blood pressure

The Boardman library will host a blood pressure screening on Nov. 4 from 12:30-3 p.m. Sponsored by the Mahoning Chapter of American Red Cross.

Show what you know

Show What You Know: That’s a Wrap will be Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Learn to wrap your holiday gifts so they’ll be too pretty to open. You’ll learn how to make beautiful bows and wrap your gifts with flair. Bring a gift to be wrapped and we’ll help you wrap it. Ribbon and wrapping paper will be provided for one gift, or you can bring your own. For teens, adult and seniors.

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m. They meet the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. Newcomers are always welcome. For teens in grades 7-12.

Participate in mystery box challenge

The Boardman library will host a mystery box challenge on Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. Each team will receive a box of ingredients to build a structure. You will have 30 minutes to complete this challenge. BUMC annual turkey dinner

Boardman United Methodist Church will host its annual turkey dinner Nov. 14 from 4-7 p.m. Advanced sales are recommended.

st is $9 for adults, $4 for children 6-12 years-old and $1 for children under 5-years-old.

Make rainbow loom bracelets

Kids in grades 4 and up, are invited to the Rainbow Loom craft program on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Rainbow Loom bracelets are fun, unique and great to give away as presents. Each session is limited to the first 12 tweens and teens who sign up. Beginners will be walked through the single pattern bracelet, but templates will be provided for loomers with more experience. Celebrate American Indian awareness month

Celebrate American Indian Awareness Month with the Redhawk Native American Cultural Society on Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Gene Allison, a member of the Red Hawk American Indian Cultural Society, will appear in full regalia, share artifacts and stories and answer questions. Fun and educational for the whole family.

Join the Boardman library for a family story time for children of all ages with a sensory focus on Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. The program will include books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. Dazzling donuts to be Nov. 27

The Boardman library invites children of all ages to come hear food stories and bake, decorate and eat a donut on Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. Program will last one hour. Preschoolers and toddlers must attend with an adult.

Play chess at the Boardman library on Nov. 17 at 1:30 p.m. If you would like to learn to play, someone will teach you. For the family.

MCCTC students open salon

Cosmetology students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center opened The Salon at MCCTC to the public. Salon hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:15-10:30 a.m. Appointments are recommended. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, perms, hair color, manicures and hair removal. All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $5. New to the salon this year is a retail space with Paul Mitchell product, shellac manicures and a redesigned salon space.

Class reunion to be Nov. 30

The Boardman High School Class of 1973 40-year Reunion will be Nov. 30 from 6-10 p.m. at The Georgetown, located at 5945 South Ave. in Boardman. Boardman resident earns degree

Chrystin Ritter of Boardman graduated from the University of Akron during the summer of 2013. She received her M.A. in speech language pathology.

Mooney to host Veteran’s Day assembly

Cardinal Mooney will host a Veteran’s Day assembly on Nov. 11. The assembly will feature Marine Sgt. Tod Schuller, a 2005 graduate and Afghan war veteran, as the main speaker.

All veterans, Cardinal Mooney alumni, parents and friends are invited to attend the ceremony, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Those seeking more information should call the Cardinal Mooney alumni office at 330-788-5113.

Kiwanis Club to host swiss steak dinner

The Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club will hosts its annual swiss steak dinner Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield.

Cost is $10.50 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4-9 and three and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door and takeouts are available.

Caring family portrait sessions offered

Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography

The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.

Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.

Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.

For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 26

Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 11-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.

Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, 50-50 raffle, games, and goodies. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

Plato’s Closet goes gold

Plato’s Closet in Boardman, located at 400 Boardman-Poland Road, was recognized for achieving the “Gold Star Standard” for Plato’s Closet stores.

A store reaches the Gold Star Standard when it achieves a set of standards set forth by the franchisor during the evaluation process. The Boardman store achieved the “Customer Experience,” “Store Operations” and “Consistent Brand Identity” standards to earn Gold Star recognition in 2013.

Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

The Boardman library will host a Dr. Frankenstein party on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Come in costume if you like, the party will include eerie music, disgusting games, a gross craft and yummy (or mummy?) refreshments. For Tweens in grades 4-6.

Casino trip Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
