Library closes for holidays

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving, Nov. 28.

Give blood at the library

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive at the Austintown library on Nov. 27 from 12:30-6:30 p.m.

Class features Nook for newbies

Adults can bring your Nook to the Austintown library and the librarians will show you how to download eBooks from the Library’s Digital Catalog on their website on Nov. 25 at 6 p.m.

Kindle class set

Bring your Kindle to the library and the librarians will show you how to download eBooks from the Library’s Digital Catalog on their website on Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. Space is limited. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for specific library to register.

Make rainbow loom bracelets

Kids in grades 4 and up, are invited to the Rainbow Loom craft program on Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. at the Austintown library. Rainbow Loom bracelets are fun, unique and great to give away as presents. Each session is limited to the first 12 tweens and teens who sign up. Beginners will be walked through the single pattern bracelet, but templates will be provided for loomers with more experience. Celebrate American Indian awareness month

Celebrate American Indian Awareness Month with the Redhawk Native American Cultural Society on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Gene Allison, a member of the Red Hawk American Indian Cultural Society, will appear in full regalia, share artifacts and stories and answer questions. Fun and educational for the whole family.

Teens ready for PS2sday

Play video games in the meeting room of the Austintown library after school on Nov. 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 2:30 p.m. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Family science night

The Austintown library will host Family Science: Butterflies on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. Explore the science of butterflies (metamorphosis, migration and more) through books, stories, songs and hands-on activities. For families with kids of all ages.

Lego my library on Wednesday

Children, age 6 and up, can create Lego designs at the Austintown library on Nov. 6 from 6-7 p.m. Legos will be provided.

Label the turkey

Adults and kids, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

Roast beef dinner to be Nov. 9

The St. Joseph Men’s Club will sponsor a roast beef dinner Nov. 9 from 5-7 p.m. at the St. Joseph Social Hall, located at 4565 New Road in Austintown. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. The dinner includes roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, a beverage and dessert.

Trash and Treasure sale to be Oct. 26

The women’s group of Grace Lutheran Church, located at 162 Raccoon Road in Austintown, will be hosting its annual Trash and Treasure sale on Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be clothing, household goods, holiday decorations, children’s toys, books, and more. Baked goods will also be for sale. At 12:30 p.m., all clothing will be $1 per bag and all merchandise will be half off.

MCCTC students open salon

Cosmetology students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open The Salon at MCCTC to the public beginning Oct. 10. Salon hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:15-10:30 a.m. Appointments are recommended. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, perms, hair color, manicures and hair removal. All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $5. New to the salon this year is a retail space with Paul Mitchell product, shellac manicures and a redesigned salon space.

Craft and Vendor show to be Nov. 2

Legacy Dog Rescue Craft and Vendor show for the holiday shopping season will be Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Stacey (Indoor) Pavilion at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road.

Food and Beverages will be available for purchase.

Residents earn degrees

Austintown residents Katie Krieger (Doctor of Audiology in Audiology) and Lauren Missik (Master of Arts in Education in Educational Admninistration-higher education) graduated from The University of Akron in the summer of 2013.

Fall quarter auction to be Nov. 15

St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary Home and School will be hosting its fall quarter auction on Nov. 15 at the IHM Parish Center. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m., and the auction will begin at 7 p.m. This is a BYOB event, and therefore, limited to adults only.

Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. The required bid, from 1–4 quarters, for each item will be based on the value of the item, so please bring your own quarters. There will be a snack bar with pop, water and various snack available for purchase. We will have a 50/50 Raffle and a lottery tree drawing, too.

The proceeds of the snack bar will be used to help offset the cost of the fifth-grade trip to Camp Fitch. AMS to host craft show

Austintown Middle School, located at 800 S. Raccoon Road, will be hosting its 30th Annual PTA Craft Show Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. They will be having more than 200 vendors with crafts, food and a chinese auction. They are currently still looking for vendors and vendor questions can be directed to Kelly Constance at 330-270-9346.

Day out fundraiser

Gateways to Better Living’s “FUN”draiser Committee will be hosting a Ladies Day Out with area vendors Nov. 2. It will be a fun day to get Christmas presents and treat yourself. Funds will go toward giving back to individuals with developmental disabilities.

Kiwanis Club to host swiss steak dinner

The Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club will hosts its annual swiss steak dinner Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Cost is $10.50 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4-9 and three and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door and takeouts are available.

Fitness classes to begin

Wellness Made Easy will be offering fitness classes in Stacey Pavilion of Austintown Township Park began Oct. 6. They include Sculpting ($7) at 8 a.m., Yoga ($7) at 12:30 p.m. and Yoga for all ($5) at 6 p.m. on Mondays; Yoga Express ($5) 5:30 a.m., Senior Yoga ($5)at 12:30 p.m. and Mat Pilates at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays; Gentle Yoga ($7) at 8 a.m. and Yoga ($7) at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays; Yoga Express ($5) at 5:30 a.m. and Circuit/Boot Camp ($7) at 11 a.m. on Thursdays; Sculpting ($7) at 8 a.m. and Yoga ($7) at 12:30 p.m. on Fridays.

Austintown residents receive scholarships

Sara Guittar, Joshua Herington, Alyssa Conn, Emily Fisher, Brandon Fisher, Anthony Adams, Kayla Farrant, Julia Jorge, Donald Koehler, Tiffany Rapovy and Christina Seydlorsky, from Austintown, have received Scholarships for Excellence at Youngstown State University.

Caring family portrait sessions offered

Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography.The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.

Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.

Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.

For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 26

Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 11-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.

Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, 50-50 raffle, games, and goodies. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

Casino trip to be Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

SJIHM new lunch program

For the 2013-2014 school year, St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary has announced that it will be offering free and reduced-price meals for students unable to pay the full price for meals or milk served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast, After School Care Snack or Special Milk Program. Each school office and central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display.

Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
