Pumpkin carving for kids

Ages 3-5 class

When: Saturday, 11 a.m. to noon.

Ages 6-11 class

When: Saturday, 1:30 to 3 p.m.

What: Children will enjoy carving their own pumpkin to take home. As you and your child get creative, learn what makes a pumpkin a pumpkin, taste-test different flavors of pumpkin seeds, and see how many seeds your pumpkin has in a pumpkin seed-counting contest.

Cost: $12; FFRG members, $10.

Breakfast botany: Larch

When: Friday, 8:30- 10 a.m.

What: Start your morning with a brisk walk to see plants growing in the Gardens. Return to the Garden Cafe to enjoy a light breakfast and hear interesting facts about trees.

Cost: $9; FFRG member, $7.

Gardens in Watercolor Eternal Spring

When: Through Nov. 10

What: International artist Gary Bukovnik returns to bring his world-renowned floral watercolor artwork to Weller Gallery. His not-so-still-life paintings express movement of time and space as flowers, leaves and stems appear to move on the paper. His work is reminiscent of Asian art and its luminescence.

LEAF COLLECTIONS

When: Through November

Where: Various communities, including Youngstown, Campbell, Struthers, Sebring, New Middletown, Poland Village, Lowellville, Canfield city and township.

What: Leaf pickup, either bagged or at curb; or collection, at central sites.

Christmas tree recycling

When: Dec. 26-Jan. 31, 2014.

What: Each year during the holiday season, an extra 5 million tons of waste are generated — 25 percent more than usual. The Mahoning County Green Team recycles Christmas trees at designated drop-off sites. Trees will be donated to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for use as wildlife habitat.

Details: Last year, Mahoning County diverted nearly 120,000 pounds of Christmas trees from the waste stream.
