Ohio teen accused of trying to kill parents

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — A 16-year-old Ohio boy was arrested today on juvenile charges of attempted murder and arson after authorities say he tried to kill his parents by setting their house on fire as they slept and tying their bedroom door shut.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said he’s recommending that prosecutors elevate the charges to adult court, saying the teen admitted to trying to kill his parents and had detailed plans in a journal of how he would do it.

“It was cold and calculated,” Jones said. “He admitted to doing it and he has no remorse whatsoever.”

Deputies responded to a fire late Wednesday night to find that the teen’s 56-year-old father had jumped out of the second story of his burning home in Liberty Township, injuring his leg.

His 50-year-old wife was screaming from a second-floor window. Deputies and fire crews rescued her with a ladder after they were unable to get to her from inside because the fire was so hot, Jones said.

The couple was taken to a hospital, him for his leg and her for smoke inhalation.

Soon after putting out the fire, investigators found the teen and his journal, which Jones said included blueprints detailing how he would kill his parents.

The Associated Press is not identifying the boy or his family because of his age.

He’s in juvenile jail and has a court hearing set for Nov. 5.
