Officials probe fire on Early Road

YOUNGSTOWN

Fire officials continue to investigate what caused a fire at a 739 Early Road home about 6:50 p.m. Tuesday that did $10,000 in damage, fire reports said.

Reports said the homeowner discovered the fire and then called 911. First crews on the scene found smoke coming out of an upstairs room.

The fire started in a corner bedroom, and the people inside told firefighters that they heard a crackling sound just before it started, reports said. One firefighter suffered a strained shoulder, but there were no other injuries.

Trick-or-treat event

Champion Estates Assisted Living, 1 Windsor Place, will host a community trick-or-treat from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Festivities will include trick-or-treating, coloring contests, pumpkin painting, pumpkin bowling and refreshments.

Walk to School Day

Hubbard students will participate in their first Walk to School Day on Friday.

The event begins at 7 a.m. for middle- and high-school students and at 7:40 a.m. for St. Patrick’s and elementary students.

Participants are meeting at Hubbard Roosevelt Gymnasium.

Karen A. Studer, an Action for Healthy Kids advocate, organized the event.

Studer said the event highlights the benefits of walking or biking to school. The entire community is encouraged to participate, Studer said. Volunteers are needed.
