Grand jury indicts David Hackett on aggravated-murder charge

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County grand jury today indicted David N. Hackett on an aggravated-murder charge with death-penalty specifications in the stabbing death of Collena Carpenter of Homeworth in Columbiana County.

Carpenter’s body was found by a city police officer on routine patrol on Oct. 14 along an access road to the Mahoning River near West Avenue in the vicinity of the city water department’s engineering division.

Carpenter, 30, who lived with Hackett, had been stabbed more than 60 times.

In addition to the capital-murder charge, Hackett, 51, of New York Avenue on the city’s North Side, was also indicted on two counts of kidnapping and one count of rape with repeat violent-offender specifications.

Hackett served a prison sentence for a 1978 homicide he committed as a 16-year-old. He has other convictions in other states, including Pennsylvania.
