BOARDMAN

Youngstown Business and Professional Women’s Club honored Liz McGarry, director of development at Hospice of the Valley, as Woman of the Year on Oct. 22 in Overture at Antone’s Banquet Center, 8578 Market St.

The event was sponsored by YBPW and underwritten by Denise DeBartolo York during National Business Women’s Week.

Keynote speaker was Patricia M. Sweeney, health care commissioner of Mahoning County, who discussed the impact of her gender throughout her career. Tracie Schmidt, president of YBPW, presented the award.

The evening included dinner, a mystery box giveaway and basket raffle.

McGarry was chosen because of her fund development for many volunteer organizations, including Second Harvest Food Bank, American Heart Association, Youngstown Symphony Guild and especially Hospice of the Valley, where she has focused her efforts since 2001. She has helped Hospice of the Valley raise more than $7 million, which aided in opening inpatient facilities for the terminally ill. She also volunteers for many other organizations.

National Business Women’s Week takes place the third week each October, when working women and employers who support them and their families have been honored since 1928.

For information about the club contact Lisa Dickson, first vice president, at 330-509-9603. All proceeds will benefit the Dr. Anne McMahon Scholarship Award, which helps promote female leaders in our community.
