Trial delayed

Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court has allowed the trial date for Scott H. Walker, 33, accused of killing 4-year-old Nicholas Partin, to be postponed to Feb. 24, 2014. His trial was scheduled to begin Nov. 12, but David Rouzzo of the Ohio Public Defender’s Office, who represents Walker, asked to have time to get an expert medical witness. Prosecutors say Walker struck the boy in the stomach with his hand June 14, which caused the boy to die from internal injuries sometime that night or early the next day, when family members called 911 for him. The family was living on North Park Avenue Extension in Bazetta Township.

Robbery at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

Police were looking for an armed robber Tuesday evening after a woman was robbed of her purse in the Lincoln Avenue parking deck at Youngstown State University.

YSU spokesman Ron Cole said the robbery happened around 5:30 p.m. while the woman was sitting in her car. Two men walked up to her window. One pointed a gun and demanded the purse. Police chased one suspect on foot and caught him within minutes, Cole said. Police were tracking the other suspect in the Smoky Hollow area.

YSU sent text alert messages about the robbery to students and faculty, Cole said. Cole said there have been some robberies in recent months several blocks north of the YSU campus, but not on campus until today.

Malls against bullying

NILES

The Eastwood Mall, 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road, is teaming up with Malls and Retailers Unite Against Bullying to bring attention to October as National Bullying Prevention Month.

Captain McFinn and Friends is sponsoring the event. More than 100 malls across America are participating.

The Eastwood Mall will participate with an Anti-Bullying Pledge Signing at 11 a.m. today in the mall’s center court. Trumbull County Commissioners Frank Fuda and Dan Polivka, as well Niles Superintendent Frank Danso, will attend. The intent is to bring educators and policy-makers together for the bullying prevention cause.

Head football coaches and team captains from Niles, Howland, Girard, Mooney and Harding High Schools will also attend.

Child hit by car

YOUNGSTOWN

Police say a child was struck by a car on Youngstown’s East Side Tuesday, according to Vindicator broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV.

Police were called to the corner of Stewart Avenue and Katherine Street just before 3 p.m.

That’s were they found a 5- year-old boy crying on the ground in pain, WFMJ reported.

Witnesses say a woman driving a Brown Pontiac G-6 struck the child and fled, but returned to the scene voluntarily.

The boy was taken to the hospital by ambulance. There was no word on his condition or if the driver faces any charges.

Leaf pickup

Hubbard’s leaf pickup begins Monday. A crew on the east side of town will begin in the First Ward on McKinley and Hughes roads and work north, finishing in the Fourth Ward. Another crew will be on the west side. It will begin in the Second Ward in the Meadowland area and work north, finishing in the Third Ward.

The Curriculum/Extra-Curricular/Sports Committee of the Youngstown school board meets at 5 p.m. today in room 214 at the Irene L. Ward Building, 20 W. Wood St. , to discuss new state indicators.

Park/rec meeting

YOUNGSTOWN

The city’s park and recreation commission will have a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Covelli Centre’s community room to discuss the park system and a recent study on the department’s properties. A charter amendment on the Nov. 5 ballot could eliminate the commission, created in 1935, if passed.

Victory quilts of WWII

CORTLAND

The Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District will present Victory Quilts of World War II with Linda Armstrong of Pymatuning State Park at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center, 520 W. Main St. She will discuss who made the quilts, their meaning and use. Anyone with a quilt from the era is encouraged to bring it to share with the group. Drug charges

CAMPBELL

Police stopped a Youngstown man for driving left of center on Jackson Street shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, then arrested him on drug charges after finding suspected marijuana in his car. When police pulled over the driver — identified as 36-year-old Benjamin T. McClendon of Berkley Street — they noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the car. McClendon, however, denied having anything in the car, but police found a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana, along with a suspected marijuana cigarette. They also confiscated $975. McClendon is charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, and police cited him for the traffic offense.

MSWCD election

Youngstown

Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District will host its annual election and luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the Rossi Auditorium at Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave.

The luncheon will be provided by The Fifth Season from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a cost of $9 per person. Awards will be presented at noon to educator of the year, contractor of the year and cooperator of the year. Voting will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to fill two seats on the board of supervisors. Candidates in the special election are George J. Mesaros of Youngstown, Gregory P. Sharp of Beloit and Kimberly P. Urig of Canfield. Participants must be eligible voters, at least 18, and a resident or landowner in the district.

Shot at door

WARREN

A 41-year-old Scott Street man reported that a man at his brother’s house in the 900 block of South Street fired three gun shots at him at 12:42 a.m. Tuesday, but he was not injured. The man said he knocked on his brother’s front door and a black male wearing a red shirt answered. The victim asked a couple times whether his brother was there. Then the suspect pulled a gun and fired three shots, as the victim ran down the steps and down the street. Officers arrived and found three shell casings on the front porch. They also found a scale and crack cocaine inside the house but not the suspect.
