1864: Forces led by Union Gen. Samuel R. Curtis repel Confederate Gen. Sterling Price’s army in the Civil War Battle of Westport in Missouri.

1910: Blanche S. Scott becomes the first woman to make a public solo airplane flight, reaching an altitude of 12 feet at a park in Fort Wayne, Ind.

1915: Tens of thousands of women march in New York City, demanding the right to vote.

1941: The Walt Disney animated feature “Dumbo” premieres in New York.

1942: During World War II, Britain launches a major offensive against Axis forces at El Alamein in Egypt, resulting in an Allied victory.

1954: West Germany is invited to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which it does the following year.

1956: A student-sparked revolt against Hungary’s Communist rule begins; as the revolution spreads, Soviet forces start entering the country, and the uprising is put down within weeks.

1938: Coach Dike Beede leads his Youngstown College football squad to its first victory, a 20-0 win over Westminster, in front of a large crowd in New Wilmington for the Westminster homecoming.

The political eyes of the nation will focus on Mahoning County as the Democratic and Republican gubernatorial and senatorial candidates bring their battle for control of the Buckeye State to the Valley. U.S. Sen. Robert A. Bulkley, a Democrat, and Robert A. Taft, the Republican nominee, will debate. Also appearing will be Charles Sawyer, Democratic gubernatorial nominee, and John W. Bricker, the Republican nominee.
