Reds choose pitching coach as next manager
CINCINNATI
Pitching coach Bryan Price was first on the Reds’ list of manager candidates. Three hours of answering every question tossed his way ended their search rather quickly. After one interview, it was over.
The Reds stayed in-house for their next manager, giving Price a three-year deal Tuesday that came with expectations that he’ll take them deep into the playoffs right away.
Dusty Baker led the Reds to three 90-win seasons and three playoff appearances in the last four years, their best stretch of success since Sparky Anderson managed the Big Red Machine in the 1970s.
But Cincinnati got knocked out in the first round of the postseason each time. The Reds fired Baker with a year left on his two-year deal after a final-week fade that included an implosion by the pitching staff.
Dodgers sign Cuban infielder Guerrero
LOS ANGELES
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Cuban prospect Alexander Guerrero to a $28 million, four-year contract Tuesday. The deal calls for a $10 million signing bonus payable upon approval of the contract by Major League Baseball. The 26-year-old infielder defected from Cuba earlier this year and moved to Haiti. He has been training in the Dominican Republic, where scouts for the Dodgers saw him during workouts.
Guerrero’s deal eliminates the Dodgers as a possible bidder for Robinson Cano, the New York Yankees All-Star who is eligible for free agency and is seeking a contract that could approach $300 million. Guerrero played seven seasons in Serie Nacional, Cuba’s top professional league, where he was a three-time All-Star selection.
Funding OK’d for MLS stadium in Orlando
ORLANDO, Fla.
County commissioners on Tuesday approved $20 million in tourism taxes to be used toward the funding of an $84 million downtown Orlando Major League Soccer stadium, clearing the last hurdle for the city to be the home of the league’s next expansion franchise. MLS president Mark Abbott said in a statement after the vote that the league looks forward to working with the Orlando ownership group to finalize the agreement to bring a franchise to the central Florida city.
The Orange County Commission’s vote was 5-2 Tuesday night. Earlier this month, city officials voted unanimously on the same funding plan to help the minor league USL Pro League Orlando City Soccer Club build the 18,000-seat, soccer-specific stadium. The team will contribute the rest of the funding for construction.
