US Sen. Brown offers bill to help reduce unemployment among vets

AUSTINTOWN — With the unemployment rate among recent Iraq and Afghanistan veterans nearly double Ohio’s overall employment rate, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Avon, outlined how the proposed Troop Talent Act of 2013 would help reduce unemployment among recently returned service members and ease their transition into the civilian workforce.

Speaking at a press conference today at American Legion Post 301 on Oakwood Avenue, Brown, a senior member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, was joined by Youngstown native, Marine Sgt. Bryant Jackson, a Purple Heart recipient. Jackson, who served as a field radio operator during his service in Afghanistan, said he has been unable to find work which would use those skills.

Brown said he supports the Troop Talent Act of 2013 because it would ensure a clearer and easier path to matching military skills with civilian accreditation.
