New pain block system for imaging

Tracy Neuendorf, an interventional pain-management specialist at St. Joseph Health Center, has completed the first procedure in Ohio to implant a new pain-block system that is safe during full-body magnetic resonance imaging.

While implantable neurostimulation systems have been used for decades to treat patients with chronic back and limb pain, this is the only implantable system safe for patients undergoing MRI, Neuendorf said.

Free skin-cancer screening event

The Columbiana County Health Department will host a free skin-cancer screening event Oct. 29.

Any Columbiana County resident with a suspicious lesion such as a sore that will not heal, a mole or wart that has changed, a change in color pigmentation of the skin, or any skin abnormality may be seen at the clinic, 7360 State Route 45.

Free spine and posture checks

Dr. Jim Mussler, chiropractor and owner of WellnessOne, will perform free spine and posture checks and pain-relief consultations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 30 at 843 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Dr. Mussler will perform the free service to celebrate National Chiropractic Awareness Month.

Pancake fundraiser

YOUNGSTOWN

Hospice of the Valley volunteers will sponsor a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 3 at St. Dominic Parish Hall, 77 E. Lucius Avenue.

The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 18 years of age, and free for children under 5 years. Proceeds from the event will benefit Hospice of the Valley volunteer projects.

Alzheimer’s and dementia registry

The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office is inviting county residents to register for a new database called Homesafe.

The new program is for families who have an autistic child or an elderly parent or loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, the deaf, blind or those who may have other developmental disabilities in the event that they may go missing. Registration will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive.

Public opinion survey

Salem Community Hospital is asking the public to participate in a survey to gauge public opinion about its operations.

Current and former patients, as well as members of the community who have not received services at SCH, are invited to take less than eight minutes to complete a short, online survey.

Participants who complete the survey will qualify to enter into a drawing to win one of three $100 Walmart gift certificates.
