City council is considering whether to have one garbage company for all its residents.

There are now four companies in the city, said Service Director Dan Livingston.

He told the council at its meeting Monday that if the city solicits bids for garbage pickup, residents will get the best price and the city will have consistency. Now, he said, entire streets are sometimes missed.

Livingston said that even if the city solicits bids, it doesn’t have to enter into a contract.

“Let’s just see what we can do,” he said.

The city would not be involved in the billing for pickup.

Livingston said the council would have to authorize the city’s board of control to solicit bids.

Councilwoman Lisha Pompili-Baumiller said she would take charge of the effort. She said she would try to have a resolution ready for the next meeting.

“Six years ago, I did a lot of work on this and we had it prepared,” she said. Council did not pass it, however.

Baumiller said she believes it would be better to have one company picking up garbage on one or two days instead of five days a week.
