City schools offers community program to inspire children

The city school district will sponsor a program for the community focusing on ways to connect with and inspire children.

The program, “Helping Our Children Succeed: Creating A Learning Environment At Home,” will provide the audience with ideas and encouragement on how to help children reach their potential to achieve their dreams. The free program will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the East High School auditorium, 474 Bennington Ave.

Speakers will be Russell J. Quaglia, founder and president of the Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations, and James Carter, former superintendent of schools, in Selma, Ala.

Quaglia, an expert on student aspirations, has appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” and has published numerous articles in leading educational journals. The Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations has been working with students in the city schools for more than a year. It is founded on the belief that “when students have high aspirations, they have the ability to dream about the future, while being inspired in the present to reach those dreams.”

Carter has decades of leadership and school-change experience. As the superintendent in Selma, Carter guided the district through tumultuous times in the 1970s and 1980s.
