Canfield’s Orr earns golf honor at Clarion

CLARION, PA.

Canfield native Amanda Orr, a four-year women’s golf starter at Clarion University, was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference golfer of the week for her performance Oct. 11-12. Orr won medalist honors in the rain-shortened Sally Carroll Classic hosted by Seton Hill University at Hannastown Golf Club in Greensburg.

“I’m so happy for Amanda – she really deserves this award,” Clarion head oach Marie Gritzer said. “She has been a very dedicated student and athlete, and with this being her senior season, it couldn’t come at a better time.”

Orr is the daughter of Stan and Carol Orr of Canfield, is a marketing major, a member of the American Marketing Association and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.

Irving’s strong effort lifts Cavs over 76ers

Kyrie Irving had 17 points and 12 assists to spoil the homecoming for Evan Turner as Cleveland beat the Philadelphia 76ers 104-93 on Monday night in an exhibition game played at Value City Arena on the Ohio State campus. Turner, who had 14 points, was the national player of the year for the Buckeyes as a junior in 2010 before deciding to enter the NBA Draft, where he was the second overall selection.

The Cavs (4-2) pulled away with the aid of a technical given to Philadelphia’s Royce White after he picked up his fifth foul with 8:57 remaining. He was ejected and Matthew Dellavedova made three free throws for a 78-74 lead. Tristan Thompson had 15 points and 16 rebounds for Cleveland.

Cavs retiring jersey of center Ilgauskas

CLEVELAND

Zydrunas Ilgauskas’ jersey is going up to where he can’t even reach it. The Cavaliers will retire Ilgauskas’ No. 11 on March 8, raising it to the rafters in Quicken Loans Arena to honor their beloved former center who overcame major foot injuries early in his career to become one of Cleveland’s best players.

Ilgauskas’ jersey will be retired when the Cavs host the New York Knicks. It’s a fitting tribute to the popular Ilgauskas, who is known simply as “Z” to Cleveland fans. He played 12 seasons with the Cavaliers and was twice named an NBA All-Star.

Dodgers CF Kemp has surgery on left ankle

LOS ANGELES

Matt Kemp has had arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle, and the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder should be ready in time for the start of next season. The team said the surgery occurred Monday in Charlotte, N.C., and involved removing several spurs, a loose body, and a microfracture procedure on a bone. Kemp will be in a splint for two weeks, then will wear a boot for another two weeks.

It’s the second surgery for Kemp in less than two weeks. He had cleanup surgery on his left shoulder Oct. 8, a procedure that was planned before he was shut down for the postseason because of his sprained left ankle. Kemp missed 52 games during the last two months of the season while on the disabled list.

Grambling boycott ends after forfeit

GRAMBLING, La.

Naquan Smith and his Grambling football teammates have no regrets about a nearly weeklong boycott that forced the university to forfeit its game against Jackson State on Saturday. Grambling players stood behind Smith Monday during a press conference outside of the Eddie Robinson Museum on campus. Smith said the entire team was present and that the vote to return to the field was “100 percent.”

“The football team took a stance on what we thought was right,” Smith said. “We did not quit on our university. There are many problems that exist and if no one says anything, nothing will become of our institution. We hope coach Eddie Robinson and his legendary players appreciate we took a stand and thought we were right.”
