YSU getting $470K fed grant to purchase STEM equipment

YOUNGSTOWN — U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan and Youngstown State University President Randy Dunn will announce a $470,000 federal grant Tuesday to purchase equipment to be used for the advancement of science, technology, engineering and math.

Ryan of Niles, D-13th, spoke exclusively today on Vindy Talk Radio about the National Science Foundation grant.

“It builds on our technology base and helps grow YSU as a research university,” he said. “The whole idea is to diversify the [area’s] economy. I’m really, really pleased with the direction we [are taking] in the Mahoning Valley compared to 10, 11 years ago.”

Because of the growth of the university’s STEM program as well as the Youngstown Business Incubator and National Addititve Manufacturing Innovation Institute, Ryan said his congressional office is receiving numerous calls from companies interested in advanced manufacturing that are considering coming to the Mahoning Valley.
