Patrolman Michael Krafcik is the Warren City policeman involved in the Saturday shooting death of Taemarr Walker, 24, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, WFMJ TV, reported.
Late Saturday, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation confirmed that Walker was the man killed at about 1:50 a.m. Walker, of Warren, has a long criminal record and was a suspect in a 2009 homicide in which he was also wounded.
Krafcik, who has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation of the shooting, was investigating an unattended car off the road on the city’s southwest side at the intersection of Palmyra and Risher roads when he shot Walker.
Krafcik was not injured.
According to the 911 tape of the police call, Krafcik found the car unoccupied and then radioed in the license plate number for a records check and a tow. Shortly after, the officer asked for backup because another car with two people inside had arrived on the scene, one with a gun.
Authorities recovered two weapons from the scene, but police would not confirm whether Walker had pointed a weapon at the officer.
The Trumbull County Coroner’s office was to have conducted an autopsy on Walker’s body Sunday, according to Warren Law Director Gregory Hicks. The results of the autopsy were not available Sunday night.
