Louis Mann guilty of killing and robbing his parents

Louis Mann, 33, whose wife described him as a calm person during testimony in his murder trial this week, was true to that description as Judge W. Wyatt McKay announced guilty verdicts Thursday in the killing of his parents.

Mann, who killed Phillip Mann, 59, and Frances Mann, 53, two years ago in their Jefferson Street Southwest home, also was found guilty of the specifications that could result in the death penalty.

The jury, which deliberated only an hour before rendering its verdict, will reconvene at 9 a.m. Thursday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to begin to hear testimony in the penalty phase.

Mann’s attorneys have said they will present evidence of Louis Mann having been abused by his parents.

Mann was convicted on all counts. In addition to two counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated robbery, the jury found him guilty of specifications indicating two or more murders, committing murder while committing an aggravated robbery and use of a firearm in the killing of his father.

Mann admitted the murders in an interview with police, saying he strangled his mother with a clothesline after she told him she wanted to take custody of his daughter.

When his father came into the room with a rifle, Louis Mann took the rifle, then “took out 31 years of rage” by hitting his father of the head repeatedly with a flashlight and shooting him four times in the head.

Mann’s attorneys with the Ohio Public Defender’s Office told the jury that Mann committed the murders.

The aggravated robbery charge stems from Mann taking his parents’ Cadillac and debit card.
