Candy-free Trick-or-Treat to be Oct. 19

The Second Annual Trick Nor Treat Halloween Candy-Free event will be Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Beyond Expectations South Bridge Therapy and Learning Center, located at 725 Boardman-Canfield Road, E-1 in Boardman.

There will be non-food Trick-or-Treating inclusive for children with food allergies, special diets or whose parents just don’t want more sugar. There will also be pumpkin decorating and crafts, Halloween games, Bunnies in Baskets, live music and a costume contest.

The event is free and open to the community and is sponsored by the Therapy Team at Best Learning Center, Beyond Expectations Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy Sensations, Brittany Spaulding Yost, MA, PC, LSW, Dynamic Music Therapy and Bunnies in Baskets Certified Therapy Rabbits.

MCCTC students open salon

Cosmetology students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open The Salon at MCCTC to the public beginning Oct. 10. Salon hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:15-10:30 a.m. Appointments are recommended. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, perms, hair color, manicures and hair removal.

All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $5. New to the salon this year is a retail space with Paul Mitchell product, shellac manicures and a redesigned salon space.

Saxon Club to have pork-kraut dinner

The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road, will host its next pork-kraut dinner on Oct. 20 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price is $8.75 for adults and $5 for children, and includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

Audubon Society hosts birdwatching talk

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Birding as a Window Into Nature” on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Larry Richardson, retired director of Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, will entertain with the discoveries he made while birdwatching. Class reunion to be Nov. 30

The Boardman High School Class of 1973 40-year Reunion will be Nov. 30 from 6-10 p.m. at The Georgetown, located at 5945 South Ave. in Boardman. The cost is $35 per person and includes a buffet dinner, cake, cash bar, amd dancing. Spaghetti dinner to be Oct. 20

The Knights of Columbus Fr. Venglaric Council 11915 at St. Charles in Boardman will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner Oct. 20 from 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the Church Hall. The event, which will include a basket raffle, will feature spaghetti and meatballs at a cost of $8 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 years of age and children under 6-years-old will eat for free. The dinner will include a salad, bread and butter, drink and cake. Carry out orders will be available beginning at 10 a.m.

Also, the Knights’ spaghetti sauce and meatballs will be available for separate purchase beginning at 10 a.m. the morning of the dinner; one can bring one’s own container, or the Knights can provide one. Proceeds will benefit the council’s charitable endeavors.

Mooney to host Veteran’s Day assembly

Cardinal Mooney will host a Veteran’s Day assembly on Nov. 11. The assembly will feature Marine Sgt. Tod Schuller, a 2005 graduate and Afghan war veteran, as the main speaker.

All veterans, Cardinal Mooney alumni, parents and friends are invited to attend the ceremony, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Those seeking more information should call the Cardinal Mooney alumni office at 330-788-5113.

Boardman resident earns degree

Chrystin Ritter of Boardman graduated from the University of Akron during the summer of 2013. She received her M.A. in speech language pathology.

Kiwanis Club to host swiss steak dinner

The Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club will hosts its annual swiss steak dinner Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield.

Cost is $10.50 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4-9 and three and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door and takeouts are available.

International Torch Club meeting set

Dr. Charles W. Darling, Professor Emeritus of History at YSU will be the speaker at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting.

The meeting will be Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan rooms I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University.

His presentation is entitled “The Ballad World of Francis James Child.” Musical examples accompany the discussion.

Caring family portrait sessions offered

Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography

The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.

Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.

Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.

For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

Parent information night to be Oct. 22

Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St., will host a parent information night Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Parents of seventh- and eighth-grade students considering enrolling their sons or daughters in the school are invited. Members of the school’s administration will explain the school’s curriculum, extracurricular programs, school policies and financial aid opportunities. In addition, information concerning enrollment procedures will also be available.

Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 26

Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 11-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.

Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, 50-50 raffle, games, and goodies. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

Plato’s Closet goes gold

Plato’s Closet in Boardman, located at 400 Boardman-Poland Road, was recognized for achieving the “Gold Star Standard” for Plato’s Closet stores.

A store reaches the Gold Star Standard when it achieves a set of standards set forth by the franchisor during the evaluation process. The Boardman store achieved the “Customer Experience,” “Store Operations” and “Consistent Brand Identity” standards to earn Gold Star recognition in 2013.

Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

The Shops at Boardman Park will be soon be offering a new and fun option in dining to the Boardman area: DiBella’s Old Fashioned Subs.

Luncheon fundraiser set

A Halloween luncheon fundraiser will be Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. in the Boardman library meeting room. There will be a scarf demonstration by Caryl Sprankle of Shine On Me By Caryl; a raffle with Halloween and fall baskets and a autumn floral centerpiece demonstration by Kathy Foster. Tickets are $20. Tween Halloween party to be Oct. 30

The Boardman library will host a Dr. Frankenstein party on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Come in costume if you like, the party will include eerie music, disgusting games, a gross craft and yummy (or mummy?) refreshments. For Tweens in grades 4-6.

Give blood at the library

Sensory story time set

The Boardman library will host sensory story time Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. for children of all ages with a sensory focus. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. Children will enjoy books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. International buffet set

Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, will host their annual international buffet on Oct. 19, with two seatings: 4 and 6 p.m.

Cost is $15 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12, children under 6 are free. The dinner includes food and desserts from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Sweden. No tickets will be sold at the door and there are no carry outs. Tickets are available by calling the church office at 330-758-5745 or Nancy at 330-758-9308. Tickets must be purchase by Oct. 13. Proceeds will used for community outreach and the support of Bethel’s ministry.

Casino trip Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
