Trash and Treasure sale to be Oct. 26

The women’s group of Grace Lutheran Church, located at 162 Raccoon Road in Austintown, will be hosting its annual Trash and Treasure sale on Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be clothing, household goods, holiday decorations, children’s toys, books, and more. Baked goods will also be for sale. At 12:30 p.m., all clothing will be $1 per bag and all merchandise will be half off.

Candy-free Trick-or-Treat to be Oct. 19

The Second Annual Trick Nor Treat Halloween Candy-Free event will be Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Beyond Expectations South Bridge Therapy and Learning Center, located at 725 Boardman-Canfield Road, E-1 in Boardman. There will be non-food Trick-or-Treating inclusive for children with food allergies, special diets or whose parents just don’t want more sugar. There will also be pumpkin decorating and crafts, Halloween games, Bunnies in Baskets, live music and a costume contest. The event is free and open to the community and is sponsored by the Therapy Team at Best Learning Center, Beyond Expectations Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy Sensations, Brittany Spaulding Yost, MA, PC, LSW, Dynamic Music Therapy and Bunnies in Baskets Certified Therapy Rabbits.

MCCTC students open salon

Cosmetology students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open The Salon at MCCTC to the public beginning Oct. 10. Salon hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:15-10:30 a.m. Appointments are recommended. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, perms, hair color, manicures and hair removal. All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $5. New to the salon this year is a retail space with Paul Mitchell product, shellac manicures and a redesigned salon space.

Saxon Club to have pork-kraut dinner

The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road, will host its next pork-kraut dinner on Oct. 20 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price is $8.75 for adults and $5 for children, and includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

Audubon Society hosts birdwatching talk

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Birding as a Window Into Nature” on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Larry Richardson, retired director of Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, will entertain with the discoveries he made while birdwatching. The event will be offered at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, located on Route 46 in Canfield.

Annual raffle results

The winners of the Austintown Alumni Association’s annual raffle were announced at the Hall of Fame football game on Oct. 11. The first prize winner of $500 was Joe Dutko. the second prize basket containing $250 in local gift cards was won by Judy Petoscia Rohrbaugh and the third prize dinner for two at Rachel’s Restaurant was Mark Cole. The Alumni Association uses profits from the raffle to award scholarships to graduating Fitch seniors and to support mini grants for classroom instruction throughout the system. Craft and Vender show to be Nov. 2

Legacy Dog Rescue Craft and Vender show for the holiday shopping season will be Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Stacey (Indoor) Pavilion at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road.

Food and Beverages will be available for purchase.

Residents earn degrees

Austintown residents Katie Krieger (Doctor of Audiology in Audiology) and Lauren Missik (Master of Arts in Education in Educational Admninistration-higher education) graduated from The University of Akron in the summer of 2013.

Candidates to speak Oct. 21

The Austintown Council of PTAs will host a candidate forum at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Austintown Elementary School. The candidates for Austintown Board of Education will be at the event. Each will be given five minutes to speak. Also included will be a meet and greet with refreshments. The public is welcome.

October Board of Education meeting

The regular session of the October Board of Education meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road-Lynn Kirk Loop.

A work session will precede the meeting beginning at 3 p.m. in the Central Office, located at 700 S. Raccoon Road. An executive session for the purpose of discussion with regard to the sale of public property may also take place.

Fall quarter auction to be Nov. 15

St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary Home and School will be hosting its fall quarter auction on Nov. 15 at the IHM Parish Center. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m., and the auction will begin at 7 p.m. This is a BYOB event, and therefore, limited to adults only.

Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. The required bid, from 1–4 quarters, for each item will be based on the value of the item, so please bring your own quarters. There will be a snack bar with pop, water and various snack available for purchase. We will have a 50/50 Raffle and a lottery tree drawing, too.

The proceeds of the snack bar will be used to help offset the cost of the fifth-grade trip to Camp Fitch. AMS to host craft show

Austintown Middle School, located at 800 S. Raccoon Road, will be hosting its 30th Annual PTA Craft Show Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. They will be having more than 200 vendors with crafts, food and a chinese auction. They are currently still looking for vendors and vendor questions can be directed to Kelly Constance at 330-270-9346.

Kiwanis Club to host swiss steak dinner

The Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club will hosts its annual swiss steak dinner Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Cost is $10.50 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4-9 and three and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door and takeouts are available.

Day out fundraiser

Gateways to Better Living’s “FUN”draiser Committee will be hosting a Ladies Day Out with area vendors Nov. 2. It will be a fun day to get Christmas presents and treat yourself. Funds will go toward giving back to individuals with developmental disabilities.

Wellness Made Easy will be offering fitness classes in Stacey Pavilion of Austintown Township Park beginning Oct. 6. Austintown residents receive scholarships

Sara Guittar, Joshua Herington, Alyssa Conn, Emily Fisher, Brandon Fisher, Anthony Adams, Kayla Farrant, Julia Jorge, Donald Koehler, Tiffany Rapovy and Christina Seydlorsky, from Austintown, have received Scholarships for Excellence at Youngstown State University.

Caring family portrait sessions offered

Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography.The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.

Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.

Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.

For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

International Torch Club meeting set

Dr. Charles W. Darling, Professor Emeritus of History at YSU will be the speaker at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting. The meeting will be Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan rooms I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University.

Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 26

Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 11-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.

Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, 50-50 raffle, games, and goodies. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

Church to raise breast cancer awareness

Austintown Baptist Church will raise breast cancer awareness Oct. 20 from 1-5 p.m. at the church, located at 1180 S. Raccoon Road. The event will be free, we will have lunch provided as well.

A doctor will be available to perform breast exams. The event will include music, raffles, information brochures and more.

Fundraiser garage sale to be Oct. 20

Ohio Outlaws 16U Fastpitch Softball will host a charity garage sale at the Austintown Dairy Queen, located 146 N. Canfield-Niles Road, on Oct. 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Proceeds will help off set the expenses of team members who travel throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Illinois.

The Ohio Outlaws Organization plays a competitive tournament schedule with the goal of attending a National Championship tournament. For these girls, college exposure is the main objective, and these teams will travel throughout the United States to attend some of the top showcase tournaments in the country.

Donations of resellable items will be collected at the Dairy Queen in Austintown or Cornersburg, 3555 S. Meridian Road. Any items that are not sold will be donated to charity.

Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

Casino trip to be Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

SJIHM new lunch program

For the 2013-2014 school year, St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary has announced that it will be offering free and reduced-price meals for students unable to pay the full price for meals or milk served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast, After School Care Snack or Special Milk Program. Each school office and central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display.

Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
