POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Poland and Boardman townships:

POLAND

Oct. 4

Drugs: Police seized a bag of suspected heroin, three hypodermic needles, a spoon likely associated with drug use and a cap with suspected heroin from a residence in the 3900 block of Dobbins Road. No arrests had been made at the time of the report, however, and the investigation continued.

Theft: Someone in the 2200 block of Parkway Drive took $520 from a vehicle.

Oct. 5

Harassment: A Cliffview Drive man said an acquaintance has been harassing him.

Oct. 6

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a home in the 3100 block of Highland Avenue through the front door. Stolen were a power washer and a leaf blower.

BOARDMAN

Oct. 9

Theft by deception: Randell Smith, 34, of Cornell Street, Youngstown, faced a misdemeanor theft-by-deception charge. He was accused of being one of two people to have made a $67 purchase from Ianazone’s Pizza, 7271 West Blvd., with fraudulent credit-card information.

Misuse of a credit card: A Youngstown woman found out her stolen debit card was used multiple times at Southern Park Mall stores to rack up $538 worth of unauthorized charges.

Aggravated menacing: A West Boulevard woman told police she received seven text messages threatening bodily harm regarding money she supposedly owed.

Domestic violence: Markquis L. Hicks, 20, of Hillman Way, Boardman, was charged with the crime after his girlfriend alleged Hicks had pushed her in the abdomen and against a wall during an argument about a cellphone conversation she had. She also claimed he then punched her twice in the face, causing soreness to the affected area.

Oct. 10

Theft: A man stole two food items and teeth-whitening strips from Kmart, 1209 Boardman-Poland Road.

Obscenity: Authorities received a tip that a student at Boardman Center Middle School, 7410 Market St., had a cellphone containing nudity-oriented material.

Arrest: Officers responded to a report of someone causing a scene at Giant Eagle, 476 Boardman-Canfield Road, where they took into custody 48-year-old Pamela M. George upon learning George, of Fox Run Drive, Boardman, was wanted on a Canfield warrant charging criminal trespassing.

Criminal damaging: Two filing cabinets sustained $1,500 in damage at a business in the 200 block of Boardman-Canfield Road.

Theft: A woman reported two sets of keys stolen while at a Boardman-Canfield Road fitness center.

Attempted theft: Two men tried to take a $27 hooded sweat shirt from T.J. Maxx, 717 Boardman-Poland Road.

Burglary: To a residence in the 1700 block of Lemont Drive, likely through a side bedroom window. Stolen was $400.

Theft: Police arrested Catherine R. Gabrovsek, 20, of Dunkerton Road, North Bloomfield, on charges that she stole 14 DVDs valued at about $434 from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Oct. 11

Theft: Police at the Mahoning County jail took custody of Andrew V. Perillo, 24, who was wanted on two theft warrants. Perillo, of Caroline Avenue, Hubbard, was accused in an August shoplifting situation at Walmart.

Breaking and entering: A man in shorts, a red-hooded sweat shirt and dark shoes was seen on a surveillance camera breaking into Family Dollar, 4030 South Ave., after having reportedly thrown a large rock through a front window. Nothing appeared to have been stolen, though.

Theft: Police charged John P. Holbrook Jr., 30, of South Butler Avenue, Niles, with two counts of theft and one of obstructing official business, and 31-year-old Jennifer E. Kostan of Maple Street, Niles, was charged with obstructing official business and complicity to theft after a $400 laptop computer was stolen from Staples, 1260 Doral Drive. Holbrook fled on foot from officers and Kostan initially refused to turn off the car’s engine, a report said.

Theft: A township boy, 17, was charged after his mother reportedly discovered a $27 hooded sweat shirt that had been stolen from T.J. Maxx.

Aggravated menacing: A Doncaster Drive woman told officers a neighbor threatened her teenage daughters, 16 and 17, with pepper spray as they backed out of their driveway.

Theft: A township woman reported her wallet stolen from her purse while at a Doral Drive store.

Drugs: A traffic stop near Indianola Road resulted in a citation charging Xavier D. Jackson of Sheridan Road, Youngstown, with marijuana possession and having a device commonly used to grind marijuana. Suspected marijuana seeds were found, police said.

Threats: A worker for an East Western Reserve Road car dealership told police a disgruntled customer threatened to damage all of the vehicles in the lot.

Theft: A man in his 30s stole four tool kits from Lowe’s, 1100 Doral Drive.

Fraud: A Poland man found out his stolen debit card had been used to fraudulently withdraw $240 on two occasions from a South Avenue automated-teller machine.

Domestic violence: My Phan, 27, of Melrose Avenue, Boardman, was charged after his girlfriend alleged Phan pulled her hair and threatened to break her neck after having become angered when she failed to pick him up from work on time. He also punched her chest as she tried to summon help, the accuser told police.

Breaking and entering: A man reported someone broke into his deceased father’s Country Club Lane home and stole copper piping.

Theft: Anthony D. Elder, 43, who listed Youngstown addresses on Kiwatha and Bainbridge avenues, was charged in the theft of an $80 pair of tennis shoes from Sears in the Southern Park Mall.

Oct. 12

Assault: A Bonnie Place man told authorities his son, 16, was punched in the face, resulting in a black eye, while he was at a township church’s playground.

Robbery: Michael A. Faiola Jr. of Lynn Avenue, Poland, faced a robbery charge after two energy drinks were stolen from Modarelli’s Sparkle Market, 4121 South Ave. The 29-year-old Faiola tackled and struck two or three times an employee who tried to detain him, a report showed.

Aggravated menacing: A woman in the 6300 block of Market Street said her former boyfriend sent text messages in which he threatened to beat her up.

Theft: An employee with a U.S. Route 224 buffet restaurant reported his $500 iPhone stolen while at work.

Assault: A Beech Avenue woman reported a man punched her face during an argument.

Misuse of a credit card: A Youngstown woman at her Market Street bank learned her stolen debit card had been used without consent to make unauthorized purchases on four occasions totaling $1,685.

Theft: Two township boys, 12 and 13, were charged with stealing two pairs of shoes and a three-pack of socks from the J.C. Penney store in Southern Park Mall.

Criminal damaging: A garage door was damaged at a vacant home in the 7500 block of Buchanan Drive.

Domestic violence: Anh T. Nguyen, 35, was arrested at her Clifton Drive residence and charged after a man alleged that during an argument, Nguyen had used a knife to cut his arm several times.

Burglary: Took place at a home in the 50 block of Ferncliff Avenue, from which $100 was taken.

Assault: A manager with a Market Street motel told officers a man pushed a vehicle door into him and punched his face during an argument. The man said the manager had pushed him first.

Oct. 13

Arrest: A traffic stop near Shields Road led to the arrest of 34-year-old Clint T. Wern of East State Street, Salem, on one felony count of operating a vehicle impaired. The charge was upgraded to a fourth-degree felony because it was Wern’s sixth arrest for operating a vehicle impaired within 20 years, a report stated.

Harassment: A Southwoods Drive man said a woman has sent him such text messages.

Burglary: To an apartment in the 60 block of Alburn Drive via a side window. Stolen were $500, an Xbox 360 game and other items.

Harassment: A Jaguar Drive man said his former girlfriend has been harassing him.

Theft: A West Boulevard man reported the theft of Sony Play- Station 3 and Wii video-game consoles.

Citation: Police issued Michael L. Nakley of Stewart Street, Struthers, a minor-misdemeanor citation after having been pulled over near Southern Boulevard and charged with texting while driving and marijuana possession. A suspected marijuana cigarette and several suspected marijuana seeds were found, police said.

Criminal damaging: A key was used to damage the finish on a vehicle in the 7300 block of Glenwood Avenue.

Fraud: A Boardman woman found out her stolen debit card had been used without permission to make five fraudulent transactions totaling about $800.

Theft/criminal damaging: A tenant in the 700 block of Annawan Lane reportedly damaged a garage-door window and stole a refrigerator as well as a washer and dryer.

Oct. 14

Arrest: After a shoplifting situation at Walmart, 32-year-old Erica M. Lough of Bristol-Champion Trail, Bristol-ville, was charged with complicity to robbery. Lough, who also was wanted on a warrant charging failure to appear in court, was accused of using a 5-inch utility knife to open cellphone packages.

Criminal mischief: Two men smeared food on the rear door to a business in the 4800 block of Market Street.
