Mooney’s Griswold has two assists for Butler

INDIANAPOLIS

Cardinal Mooney graduate Katie Griswold assisted on both goals as Bulter University defeated Providence, 2-1 in overtime, Saturday night.

Griswold, a senior, is coming off a redshirt season in 2012 after tallying 20 goals during her first three seasons at Butler, a former Horizon League member that now plays in the Big East.

Griswold has one goal and three assists so far in 2013.

Crestview’s Hill tops PAC performers

WAYNESBURG, Pa.

Junior quarterback Carter Hill from Crestview High was named Presidents Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after completing 22-of-38 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets’ 38-0 win at Grove City Saturday.

Hill has a PAC-high 18 scoring passes through the season’s first six weeks and has posted three straight games of 300-plus passing yards and at least three touchdown passes. Hill ranks second among NCAA Division III passers in passing yards (1,816), is fourth in passing touchdowns (18) and seventh in completions per game (27.33).

Memorial swim meet aids Special Olympics

WARREN

The 10th annual Kelly Jo Carlson Memorial Swim Meet is at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Warren G. Harding High School Natatorium. Some 125 Special Olympics swimmers from Stark, Summit, Portage, Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana counties are expected.

Kelly Jo, who died at age 33 in 2004, was an athlete at Warren Western Reserve High School, earning letters in swimming, softball and tennis. She was student body president her senior year. She was a graduate of Kent State University and was completing a master’s degree in business administration at Webster University in San Diego at the time of her death.

She had volunteered at Special Olympics beginning as a child, and her parents, Paul and Lois Carlson of Bazetta Township, and other family members and friends have continued that tradition by sponsoring Saturday’s swim meet.

Contributions can be sent to Special Olympics, Fairhaven School, 420 Lincoln Way, Niles, OH 44446 in Kelly’s name. The money is used for pool fees, officials, security, lifeguards, awards and other meet costs.

Portage Trail seeks schools for expansion

ROOTSTOWN

The Portage Trail Conference is actively seeking written letters of interest for future expansion. The PTC currently includes 14 members divided into two seven-member divisions. The conference offers championships in 18 sports.

Interested schools should send a letter of interest to Rootstown athletic director Keith Waesch at Rootstown High, 4190 Route 44, Rootstown 44272. Letters also can be emailed to waesch@rootstownsparcc.org or to Southeast High principal Robert Dunn at rodunn@sepirates.org. Deadline for letters of interest is Nov. 8.

Former NBA player Meriweather dead at 59

COLUMBUS, Ga.

Former NBA player Joe C. Meriweather, who later coached women’s basketball at Park University in Missouri, has died in Columbus, Ga. He was 59. Park athletic department spokesman Steve Wilson says Meriweather, of Phenix City, Ala., died unexpectedly Sunday, and cause of death was unknown.

The 10-year NBA veteran played for the Houston Rockets, the Atlanta Hawks, the New Orleans Jazz, the New York Knicks and the Kansas City Kings.

A person familiar with the situation says the Chicago Cubs have interviewed San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria for their manager’s job. The interview took place in Southern California on Monday. The person also said the Cubs will interview Tampa Bay bench coach Dave Martinez this week.
