A flagpole and new signs at Interstate 80 and Belmont Avenue were gifts to taxpayers, not paid for by them, said Liberty Township Administrator Pat Ungaro.

Ungaro said people have questioned how the township could afford the beautification project, so he wants to stress that no taxpayer money was involved.

“It was a big deal,” Ungaro said, adding that many donors came forward with help.

The township raised more than$25,000.

Trustee Jason Rubin donated the lighting, Ungaro said.

Ungaro said volunteers will provide maintenance at the site.

Contributing to the project were Rubin; Trumbull 100; Memory Lane Photography; Powell’s Landscaping; Williams Construction; Lori Moran Liberty Plaza; Jimmy’s Italian Store; Gasser Chair; Drs. Lakshmi and V.C. Perni; Liberty Historical; and Vince and Lynn Larney.

Also, Republic Service/Allied Waste; Evets-Valley Electric; Simko; Walmart; Belmont Confection; Harold Davis; Carole McDonough; Bruce and Kelly Tamarkin; Thompson/Gibson Insurance; Fran Melendez Handels; Peggy Gum Allstate; First National Bank; and Churchill Giant Eagle.
