Kenyans take first, second place in today’s Youngstown Peace Race

YOUNGSTOWN

The 39th Annual Youngstown Peace Race today had an international flavor to it — especially in the front.

Elijah Muturi of Kenya won the 6.2-mile run with a time of 29:13.3, and his countryman Boniface Biwott finished 30 seconds behind him to take second place. Canton native Ryan Kienzle finished third with a time of 30:31.3.

More than 1,000 runners finished the 10-kilometer course.

“That’s the cool thing about it,” event organizer Ted Rupe said. “It’s not only a great community event, but you get the international runners, too.

“Everybody seemed to really enjoy it.”

Olympic Marathon qualifier Jessica Odorcic, from Madison, was the first woman to cross the finish line at 33:35.3.

The majority of the race was run through Mill Creek Park, with the finish line set up in downtown Youngstown.
