Haggerty, Eckman, Mooney doubles tandem remain alive in district play

Day one of the Northeast Ohio Division II district tennis tournament at Canton’s Harvard Park ended without a Mahoning Valley representative advancing past the second round.

In singles play, Kacie Haggerty of Cardinal Mooney defeated Anjali Kashyap of Orange High 6-1, 6-2 in the first round before falling to Ariana Iranpour of Hathaway Brown in the quarterfinal 6-0, 6-0.

Hallie Yerian, also of Mooney, fell to Sydney Green of Hawken 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and Gianna Reider of Mooney dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match to Anna Pietsch of Chagrin Falls.

Poland’s Elise Eckman defeated Canton South’s Tessa Hollinger 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 then lost to Laurel’s Danielle Buchinsky 6-0, 6-2 later in the day.

Haggerty will play Green today and the winner of Eckman and Neya Sterling, of Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas, to determine the district’s third, fourth and fifth place finishers.

In doubles play, the Cardinals featured two participants.

Lexi Kleeh and Lizzie Matthews won their first-round match 6-4, 6-4 over Sarah Adler and Megan Callanan of Hathaway Brown. The Mooney duo lost in quarterfinal play Adrian young and Alissa Nakamoto of Orange 6-0, 6-1.

Jamie DiDomenico and Dominique Cicchi lost a three-setter to Hawken’s Marshall Rankin and Nayana Ravishankar 7-5, 6-1, 7-5.

The Lakeview tandem of Lauren Paczak and Carlie Stein fell 6-3, 6-2 to Catherin Areklett and Ally Persky of Hathaway Brown.

The Kleeh-Matthews duo plays Amy Varckette and Alyx Lynham of Geneva and the winner of the Revere-Hawken doubles match, if necessary, today to determine the third, fourth and fifth-place winners.
