Hess wants more: With 164 yards passing last weekend, YSU QB Kurt Hess passed Tom Zetts as the school’s career passing leader with 7,887. Hess also holds career records for TD passes (64), total offensive yards (8,383), total TDs (72), passing yards per game (202.2) and 200-yard passing games (21). He still trails Zetts for passing attempts (1,094-1,020) and completions (654-632). “I thought about it a little bit,” Hess said of breaking the record. “[WR] Jelani Berassa mentioned it to me. He called me on the bus and told me congrats.” Hess also heard from former YSU WR Dominique Barnes, who played with Hess in 2010. “I think I have a lot left to prove,” Hess said. “My receivers have told me they want more. More wins, more yardage. If it’s a team record, which I think it is, then we’re going to try to extend it.”

Where are they now? Former YSU backup QB Patrick Angle, who transferred to Ohio Northern after last season, has completed 62 of 102 passes for 553 yards, four TDs and two interceptions for the Polar Bears (2-2). He has started all four games ... Former YSU OL Zach Conlan (Ursuline) has started all five games at Walsh (1-4). ... Former YSU RB Allen Jones (Ursuline) has carried 43 times for 312 yards and three TDs for Mercyhurst (2-3).

Poll position: YSU entered The Sports Network poll for the first time this week, debuting at 18th. The Penguins are 16th in the FCS Coaches Poll. YSU coach Eric Wolford says he never talks about polls — “The only one that matters is the one at the end of the season — and his players are following suit. “I don’t look at it anymore,” junior wide receiver Christian Bryan said. “Last year I used to look at it almost every day in class or sitting around in my apartment, but once we started losing and we went on that four-game slide, I got sick of seeing us drop. So I was like, ‘I’m not going to worry about anything. I’m just going to worry about one day at a time. I’m not going to worry about the outside media. I’m going to focus on handling our business each day.’”
