Kiwanis Club to host swiss steak dinner
The Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club will hosts its annual swiss steak dinner Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Cost is $10.50 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4-9 and three and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door and takeouts are available.
Annual health fair to be Oct. 16
The Youngstown YMCA’s annual health fair will take place Oct. 16 from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
More than 70 booths will be set up at the Central YMCA downtown promoting healthy lifestyles, offering free screenings, administering flu and pneumonia shots and doing blood work. This years event, sponsored by WellCare Health Plans, will offer a variety of services from American Red Cross, Akron Children’s Hospital, Humility of Mary Health Partners, Belmont Pines Hospital, Help Hotline Crisis Center, Mammovan, Alzheimer’s Network and many more.
The event is open to all families and individuals in the community. Some services are free and others are offered at a minimal fee. Insurance is accepted.

St. Anthony’s Auxiliary to meet
St. Anthony’s Auxiliary of Struthers will meet on Oct. 14 at noon at Johnny’s Restaurant on Market Street in Boardman. President Arlene DeChellis will discuss election of officers for 2014 and the Christmas luncheon. Telephone girls will call members for reservations.
Caring family portrait sessions offered
Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography
The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.
Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.
Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.
For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

Women’s club to host Girls Night Out
The Poland Women’s Club will be hosting its third annual “Girls Night Out” fundraiser Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at Holy Family Parish Hall. There will be a Chinese Auction. Admission is $20 and includes 20 prize tickets, appetizers, beverages and desserts. Proceeds from the event will support local organizations in the Poland community and Mahoning County.
International Torch Club meeting set
Dr. Charles W. Darling, Professor Emeritus of History at YSU will be the speaker at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting. The meeting will be Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan rooms I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University.
His presentation is entitled “The Ballad World of Francis James Child”. Musical examples accompany the discussion. The public is invited. Dinner for nonmembers is $20. To make a reservation call 330-757-4148 and for club information call 330-792-7351.
Parent information night to be Oct. 22
Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St., will host a parent information night Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.
Parents of seventh- and eighth-grade students considering enrolling their sons or daughters in the school are invited. Members of the school’s administration will explain the school’s curriculum, extracurricular programs, school policies and financial aid opportunities. In addition, information concerning enrollment procedures will also be available.

Local club to host forum
The Poland Presbyterian Church Breakfast Club will sponsor a candidate forum at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 27 in Fellowship Hall. Candidates for Poland Township Trustee and Poland Board of Education will present their platforms. In each case there are three candidates running for two positions. Candidates for Trustee are Mark Naples, Robert Lidle, and Joanne Wollet. Those running for the School Board are Dr. Larry Dinopoulos, Richard Weaver, and Maureen Rothrauff. The public is invited to attend.
Retire old flags
During the month of October, Shepherd of the Valley – Poland is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired.
Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this.
Flags can be dropped off at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 W. Western Reserve Road) between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. All flags collected will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal.

Support group to meet Oct. 16
The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet Oct. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. Doug Holland will speak on reflexology, the therapy performed on hands and feet to relieve pain in the body. The meeting will be at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, and all are welcome.
Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 26
Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 11-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.
Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, 50-50 raffle, games, and goodies. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

Children, age 6 and up, can create Lego designs at the Canfield library on Oct. 22 from 6-7 p.m. Legos will be provided.
Pajama jam set
The Poland library will host Pajama Jam: Sleepy-Time Fun for the Family on Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. Put on your pajamas and bring out the whole family for stories and fun.
Suzelis to host lecture
Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D., a naturopathic doctor in his 13th year of practice in the Mahoning Valley, will celebrate U.S. Senate Resolution 221, recently passed Sept. 10, that declares that naturopathic medicine is “safe, effective and affordable health care,” with a presentation of a free seminar titled, “Overcoming Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue” on Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center, located in South Bridge West (behind Second Sole) at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3.
Naturopathic medicine provides options for people struggling with these complex issues. Junior Women’s League to host fall conference
The GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will host the GFWC/OHIO Federation of Women’s Club’s 2013 Northeast District Fall Conference. An evening full of fun, friendship and information will be Sept. 30 at Caf 422 at 8586 South Ave. Registration begins from 5:30-6 p.m. Call to order starts at 6 p.m.
GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs Traveling officers will be in attendance to give remarks and updates on the Community Service Programs and Special Projects. Casino bus trip set
Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.
We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

Volunteer class to begin
Hospice of the Valley’s new volunteer class begins Friday, Oct. 18 at Hospice House, 9603 Sharrott Road, Poland. Classes are 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. every Friday for five weeks through Nov. 15.
Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how volunteers fit into that team.
Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes as well as helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility. New volunteers are needed for all areas of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties and western Pennsylvania. Although the training is at Hospice House this time, volunteers are assigned to patients closer to their homes.
Hospice House is located on the grounds of The Assumption Village, 9800 Market St., North Lima. Entrance to the facility is either off Sharrott Road or Market Street. For more information or to register, call 330-788-1992.

Poland Historical Society sets fall schedule
The Poland Historical Society meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Each month the regular business meetings will start at 6:30 p.m. with a free program planned for 7:30 p.m. which are open to the public. The program schedule is as follows:
Oct. 13 – Free fall open house, 1-3 p.m., at the schoolhouse. Activities and pumpkin painting are planned to entertain the children.
Oct. 15 – Regular meeting will include election of the historical society officers and trustees for 2014. Sally Thomas from the Sutliff Museum will speak about the Underground Railroad.
Nov. 19 – Following the business meeting, historical society trustees will talk about why and how “Poland” got its name.
Dec. 17 – Annual Christmas dinner for members will be offered at the schoolhouse.
Casino trip to be Oct. 26
The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.
The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Diorio named registered representative

Arms Museum plans Christmas program
Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments. The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
