V-I-C-T-O-R-Y! The students, faculty and staff of Canfield Village Middle School gathered in the school’s gymnasium to recognize, support and cheer on their fall sports teams Oct. 2.

CVMS physical education teacher and athletic director Bob Tinkey welcomed everyone to the assembly, including friends and family members of the student athletes.

“Welcome to the CVMS 2013 fall sports pep assembly. We are here to recognize our student athletes who are representing our school,” Tinkey said.

Erica Putro, CVMS gifted language arts and reading and creative writing teacher, started the assembly by recognizing the participants in the Summer Reading Program and awarding prizes to the top three readers.

The eighth-grade cheerleaders, who decorated the gym with handmade signs and red and black streamers, led the students in cheers and performed cheers and dance routines throughout the assembly.

The CVMS pep band also performed throughout the rally and revved up the crowd with their upbeat musical selections, including “Hang On, Sloopy.”

The cheerleaders and members of the fall sports teams, including seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls cross country, seventh- and eighth-grade girls volleyball and seventh- and eighth-grade football, were introduced to the cheering crowd.

Each team member was called to the stage by their coach or fellow team members. Each coach made it a point to thanks the students and staff of the middle school for all their support throughout their seasons and encouraged them to continue to come out and watch the teams play.

To end the assembly, the cheerleaders led the crowd in a V-I-C-T-O-R-Y cheer. First, they encouraged the entire crowd to cheer and then the students cheered by grade in a contest to see who could cheer the loudest for the success of the fall sports teams.
