Kiwanis Club to host swiss steak dinner
The Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club will hosts its annual swiss steak dinner Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield.
Cost is $10.50 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4-9 and three and under are free.
Tickets can be purchased at the door and takeouts are available.
Caring family portrait sessions offered
Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography
The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.
Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.
Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.
For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

Annual health fair to be Oct. 16
The Youngstown YMCA’s annual health fair will take place Oct. 16 from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
More than 70 booths will be set up at the Central YMCA downtown promoting healthy lifestyles, offering free screenings, administering flu and pneumonia shots and doing blood work.
This years event, sponsored by WellCare Health Plans, will offer a variety of services from American Red Cross, Akron Children’s Hospital, Humility of Mary Health Partners, Belmont Pines Hospital, Help Hotline Crisis Center, Mammovan, Alzheimer’s Network and many more.
The event is open to all families and individuals in the community. Some services are free and others are offered at a minimal fee. Insurance is accepted.

International Torch Club meeting set
Dr. Charles W. Darling, Professor Emeritus of History at YSU will be the speaker at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting. The meeting will be Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan rooms I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University.
His presentation is entitled “The Ballad World of Francis James Child”. Musical examples accompany the discussion. The public is invited. Dinner for nonmembers is $20. To make a reservation call 330-757-4148 and for club information call 330-792-7351.
Scout packs to sell popcorn
Canfield’s Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 25 of Canfield United Methodist Church will be selling scouting popcorn on different weekends at the Giant Eagle store in Colonial Plaza located at 525 E. Main St. (Route 224) in Canfield. Scouts will be showing and selling the Pecatonica River Popcorn Brand of products to help fund their camping and other unit programs for the upcoming year.
Boy Scout Troop 25 will be on location Oct. 12 Oct. 13 at the store from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Cub Scout Pack 25 will be on location Oct. 19 and Oct. 20 during these same hours.
Traditional yellow popcorn and microwave products will be available as well as products with flavors such as caramel, cheese, mud puddles, white gold, sea salt splash, jalapeno cheese, peanut butter cup and white ruby will be available as well as an Ohio State stadium tin. The scouts will also be collecting military product donation that will go to those serving in the military.

Auxiliary to meet
St. Anthony’s Auxiliary of Struthers will meet on Oct. 14 at noon at Johnny’s Restaurant on Market Street in Boardman. President Arlene DeChellis will discuss election of officers for 2014 and the Christmas luncheon. Telephone girls will call members for reservations.
Church to host women’s retreat
Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 South Canfield Road in Canfield, will host a Women’s Retreat from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m Nov. 2. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the cost is $20, which includes breakfast breads, coffee, lunch and prizes. In the morning, Rev. Suzanne Hill will speak on sharing your faith. In the afternoon, Joanne Smisko will give her testimony, titled “Life is a Quilt - Putting the Pieces Together.” She will also display some of her handmade quilts. Support group to meet Oct. 16
The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet Oct. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. Doug Holland will speak on reflexology, the therapy performed on hands and feet to relieve pain in the body. The meeting will be at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, and all are welcome.
Local church has fall bazaar
The United Methodist Women of Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 South Broad St. in Canfield, will present the 73rd Annual Bazaar Oct. 18 from 4-7 p.m. and Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. A cafeteria-style luncheon will be available Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Bazaar is free and open to the public. It will include such bargains as gently used books, clothing, housewares, toys and furniture. There will also be homemade rugs, floral arrangements, gift items, holiday decorations, baked goods, candies and the CUMC coleslaw for sale.
Good Morning Canfield breakfast set
The Good Morning Canfield breakfast will be 7:30 to 9 a.m. Oct. 18 at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St., Canfield.
During the event, Heidi Daniel, executive director of The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, will give details of the much-anticipated expansion of the Canfield branch on Main Street. Plans include renovation of the 5,104-square-foot location, built in 1969, plus the addition of 13,663 square feet.
In addition, Craig Olson, Canfield Board of Education member, will discuss the 5.9-mill operating levy that will be on the Nov. 5 ballot. The levy would generate $3 million annually, to be used primarily for technology advancements, additional course offerings, better security and expanded transportation. The district has not seen additional funding from a levy approval in 11 years.
Lastly, Cardinal Joint Fire District Chief Don Hutchison will announce some good news about the latest results of the Insurance Service Office’s (ISO) rating review of the district and how Canfield homeowners’ insurance rates may change because of that review.
The event is sponsored by Farmers National Bank. Cost of the breakfast is $20 for members and $30 for non-members.

Canfield residents cast in musical
The following Canfield residents were cast members in the musical “The Phantom Tollbooth” to be presented at 8 p.m. on Oct. 3-5 in Campus Grounds on the University of Mount Union’s campus:
Natalie Ricciutti, a sophomore psychology major, played the role of The Duke of Definition, Kakafonous A. Discord; Katie Proch, a senior international studies and religious studies major, played the role of Lethargarian No. 3, Word Merchant No. 3 and The Demon of Insincerity and Bryan Sfara, a junior computer science major, played the role of Lethargarian No. 6, a Page and The Awful Dynne.
In “The Phantom Tollbooth,” the audience will experience Milo’s adventures in the Land of Wisdom where he discovers the importance of thinking. While there, Milo learns of an argument between King Azaz of Dictionopolis and the Mathemagician of Digitopolis and the banishment of the Princesses Sweet Rhyme and Reason. The knowledge Milo picks up on his journey helps him, the watchdog named Tock, and their reluctant traveling companion, the Humbug, rescue the Princesses and set things right in the Land of Wisdom. The audience will be entertained by the witty text, the satire, and the humor of this show, and will learn the same timeless lesson Milo comes to understand – to cherish life’s little wonders and in the process gain an understanding of the true meaning of what is and what is not possible.
Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 26
Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 11-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.
Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, 50-50 raffle, games, and goodies. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

Griffin named to Dean’s List
Colleen Griffin, a native of Canfield and senior at Mercyhurst University, has been named to the Dean’s List for the 2012-2013 academic year. Griffin is majoring in Early Childhood/Special Education.
The Dean’s List is computed annually after summer term, which marks the end of the academic year. It is based on the completion of a minimum of 24 credits with a cumulative index of at least 3.6 out of a possible 4.0 each term.
Casino bus trip set
Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.
We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.
The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

Casino trip to be Oct. 26
The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.
The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Canfield Operation Blessing distributes food at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. every third Thursday of the month. Arms Museum plans Christmas program
Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display.
Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.
The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
