Kiwanis Club to host swiss steak dinner
The Western Mahoning County Kiwanis Club will hosts its annual swiss steak dinner Oct. 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield.
Cost is $10.50 for adults, $7.50 for children ages 4-9 and three and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door and takeouts are available.
Annual health fair to be Oct. 16
The Youngstown YMCA’s annual health fair will take place Oct. 16 from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
More than 70 booths will be set up at the Central YMCA downtown promoting healthy lifestyles, offering free screenings, administering flu and pneumonia shots and doing blood work.
This years event, sponsored by WellCare Health Plans, will offer a variety of services from American Red Cross, Akron Children’s Hospital, Humility of Mary Health Partners, Belmont Pines Hospital, Help Hotline Crisis Center, Mammovan, Alzheimer’s Network and many more.
The event is open to all families and individuals in the community. Some services are free and others are offered at a minimal fee. Insurance is accepted.

International Torch Club meeting set
Dr. Charles W. Darling, Professor Emeritus of History at YSU will be the speaker at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting.
The meeting will be Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan rooms I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University.
His presentation is entitled “The Ballad World of Francis James Child”. Musical examples accompany the discussion. The public is invited. Dinner for nonmembers is $20.

Caring family portrait sessions offered
Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography
The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.
Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.
Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.
For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

St. Anthony’s Auxiliary to meet
St. Anthony’s Auxiliary of Struthers will meet on Oct. 14 at noon at Johnny’s Restaurant on Market Street in Boardman. President Arlene DeChellis will discuss election of officers for 2014 and the Christmas luncheon. Telephone girls will call members for reservations.
Parent information night to be Oct. 22
Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St., will host a parent information night Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.
Parents of seventh- and eighth-grade students considering enrolling their sons or daughters in the school are invited. Members of the school’s administration will explain the school’s curriculum, extracurricular programs, school policies and financial aid opportunities. In addition, information concerning enrollment procedures will also be available.
Shepherd of the Valley residents get creative
Over the past few months, residents of Shepherd of the Valley - Boardman have been learning, creating, and painting their hearts out, creating over 50 pieces of art. The show will be judged and awards will be given for first, second, and third place. The public is invited to view their creations at the Second Annual SOV - Boardman Resident Art Show on Oct. 17, between 2:30-5 p.m. The artwork, created with acrylic paint, beads, shells, flowers and other art supplies, will be on display throughout the building.

Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 26
Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 11-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.
Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, 50-50 raffle, games, and goodies. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

St. Charles Ladies Guild card and bingo party
St. Charles Ladies Guild is having a card and bingo party Oct. 13 in the St. Charles Church social hall in Boardman at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $6. There will be raffles, including 50/50, table and door prizes. A light lunch will be served.
Plato’s Closet goes gold
Plato’s Closet in Boardman, located at 400 Boardman-Poland Road, was recognized for achieving the “Gold Star Standard” for Plato’s Closet stores.
A store reaches the Gold Star Standard when it achieves a set of standards set forth by the franchisor during the evaluation process. The Boardman store achieved the “Customer Experience,” “Store Operations” and “Consistent Brand Identity” standards to earn Gold Star recognition in 2013.
Support group to meet Oct. 16
The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet Oct. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. Doug Holland will speak on reflexology, the therapy performed on hands and feet to relieve pain in the body. The meeting will be at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, and all are welcome.
Casino bus trip set
Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.
We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.
The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

Friends of the Library meeting set
The Boardman Friends of the Library meeting will be Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. The meeting will explore The Hubble Telescope. Dr. Pat Durrell from YSU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy will be the presenter.
Luncheon fundraiser set
A Halloween luncheon fundraiser will be Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. in the Boardman library meeting room. There will be a scarf demonstration by Caryl Sprankle of Shine On Me By Caryl; a raffle with Halloween and fall baskets and a autumn floral centerpiece demonstration by Kathy Foster. Tickets are $20. The Boardman library will host a Dr. Frankenstein party on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Come in costume if you like, the party will include eerie music, disgusting games, a gross craft and yummy (or mummy?) refreshments. For Tweens in grades 4-6.
Library hosts Fun for 4s and 5s
Join the Boardman library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader every Tuesday in October at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Sensory story time set
The Boardman library will host sensory story time Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. for children of all ages with a sensory focus. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. Children will enjoy books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. Babies and books set at library
Babies ages 6 to 23 months can join the Boardman library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader on Oct. 11 and 25 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
International buffet set
Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman, will host their annual international buffet on Oct. 19, with two seatings: 4 and 6 p.m.
Cost is $15 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12, children under 6 are free. The dinner includes food and desserts from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Sweden. No tickets will be sold at the door and there are no carry outs. Tickets are available by calling the church office at 330-758-5745 or Nancy at 330-758-9308. Tickets must be purchase by Oct. 13. Proceeds will used for community outreach and the support of Bethel’s ministry.
Casino trip Oct. 26
The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.
The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program
Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.
The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
