Hearing, trial delayed in Ponzi-scheme case

CLEVELAND

The hearing next week and jury trial Oct. 22 in U.S. District Court here for Keelan Harris of Warren, charged in a Ponzi scheme that sent his brother to prison, have been moved back.

The new dates are 2 p.m. Dec. 9 for the final pretrial and 9 a.m. Dec. 16 for his trial.

His attorney, J. Gerald Ingram, requested the delay because of the volume of material to review in the case being heard by Judge Christopher A Boyko.

Harris, 37, remains in federal custody on the charges — eight counts of wire fraud and four counts of money laundering. His brother, Kevin, is serving a seven-year federal prison term.

Man arrested in case tied to fatal accident

YOUNGSTOWN

Michael J. Johnson Jr., wanted on a warrant for failing to appear at his arraignment after his indictment on charges he left the scene of an accident that killed a man, was arrested Wednesday afternoon.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Johnson, 24, at a home on Rosewood Avenue, said Lt. William Ross, head of the police department’s traffic bureau.

A Mahoning County grand jury indicted Johnson in July on a charge of failure to stop after the Feb. 2 accident on West Hylda Avenue on the South Side that killed 23-year-old Robert Brown of Youngstown. Reports said Brown was killed as he was leaving a bar on Hylda and walking to his car when he was hit by a car going at a high speed that did not stop.

Johnson, however, failed to attend his arraignment in August in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. He is in the county jail.
