HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley, engaging 21st-Century volunteers to improve civic health and social conditions by reaching out to volunteers to raise awareness and inspire them to make a difference; providing people with access to projects and other opportunities to learn new skills and engage in work to improve their communities; and mobilizing people to use their time, talent, money and voice to create community change. Make a Difference Day: The largest national day of community service will bring volunteers together to make a difference in their communities on Oct. 26. Millions of volunteers around the world will unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others. For more information call Kristen Gallagher at 330-782-5877.
SALSA: Save A Life Smoke Alarm program will be installing smoke alarms in the homes of Warren residents who need them most. Teams of three volunteers will be trained on the proper location and way to install the smoke alarms before being sent out on their assignments. They will meet at the Red Cross on Mahoning Avenue Northwest in Warren for breakfast, training and assignments at 9 a.m. on Oct. 26.
Clothing, toiletries and school supplies drive: The Liberty High School Interact Club will be collecting items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at W.S. Guy Middle School on Shady Road in Liberty. The Interact Room is designed to give those students in need a chance to privately shop for the items they need most.
Brownlee Woods Park Cleanup: Volunteers will be assisting with the painting of the tennis courts, fence, spreading dirt and mulch, and applying sealer to the parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 26.
Great Pumpkin 5K: The United Way of Trumbull County will have its third annual 5K run/walk at Kent State University Trumbull Campus. Volunteers are needed to assist with setup, registration and post-race activities.
Catholic Charities Regional Agency — Angel Tree Tags: Gather on Oct. 26 with a group of your friends to cut and string Angel Tree tags. The tags will then be used to collect gifts for those in need for the holidays.
Project MORE: Project MORE (Mentoring in Ohio for Reading Excellence) is a volunteer reading/mentoring project for students with disabilities or those who are not on track. Join hundreds of volunteers throughout Ohio to help students gain the skills and confidence they need to increase their individual reading levels. Volunteers will work with students for one to four 30-minute, one-on-one sessions to help students gain skills for success. College student credit: Students who have volunteer service hours required for coursework can get connected to nonprofit organizations that will work with each individual’s schedule and focus. On the YSU campus, students can stop by the HOVN office in the Williamson College of Business or call 330-782-5877.
Ohio Benefit Bank: HandsOn Volunteer Network, in cooperation with Ohio Benefit Bank and the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Food Banks (Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley), is in need of volunteers to service Mahoning and Trumbull county areas in Warren. Volunteers who are available to assist local residents with accessing benefits through federal, state and local programs should contact HandsOn Volunteer Network. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer: The American Cancer Society needs volunteers to assist with the events during October. Canfield Fairgrounds will host Making Strides Against Breast Cancer next Sunday; volunteers are needed to assist with registration, water stations, information and many other important activities.
Event volunteers: Many of HOVN’s nonprofit partners need event volunteers for projects and fundraisers. Nonprofit board members: Have you ever thought about becoming a board member for a nonprofit organization? Many of our nonprofit partners are considering new candidates. To learn more about what directors do to support a nonprofit, call HOVN. The organization will walk volunteers through the educational opportunities HOVN offers and share information about open seats with organizations.
Meals on Wheels and Trumbull Mobile Meals: Drivers are needed for all routes. Help our older friends stay healthy. This is a great opportunity for families, teams, businesses, retired couples and students who are majoring in the social-service, nursing or medical fields.
Austintown Generational Enrichment (AGE) Corp.: AGE exists to enrich the lives of all members of the community by providing warm and caring places for recreation, entertainment, camaraderie and education. AGE is seeking volunteers to help with public relations, computer Instruction, website management and newsletter development.
Community Legal aid services: A client assistant is needed to assist clients with the preparation of civil-protection orders for victims of domestic violence.
Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley: The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Many volunteer opportunities are available to support the mission of the Red Cross.
Sweats for Serenity: Help Compass Family and Community Services and Sojourner House make the lives of the clients they serve more comfortable. Donate new sweat pants and shirts to the Rape Crisis program. Donations of new undergarments also are appreciated.
