Just in case you didn’t know, the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” in ABC’s new series “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stands for “Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.” Here are five other notable TV acronyms.

v ALF: The furry, wisecracking creature in the ’80s comedy was an acronym for Alien Life Force.

v M.A.N.T.I.S.: Carl Lumbly starred as the title character in this short-lived ’90s series, a paralyzed scientist who became the titular superhero when he donned an exoskeleton-like suit known as the Mechanically Automated Neuro Transmitter Interactive System.

v M*A*S*H: The men and women in this beloved, 1972-83 dark comedy were members of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.

v S.W.A.T.: The tough guys in this 1970s series worked for an elite unit of the Los Angeles Police Department known as Special Weapons and Tactics.

v THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.: The spy agency that employed Agents Solo (Robert Vaughn) and Kuryakin (David McCallum) on the 1960s series stood for United Network Command for Law Enforcement. (Its adversary also used an acronym: THRUSH, which stood for Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity.)

“Ironside” (9 p.m., NBC): Blair Underwood stars in the premiere of this procedural that, wheelchair notwithstanding, is just average.

“Super Fun Night” (8:30 p.m., ABC): This show is really not that good, but darned if “Pitch Perfect’s” Rebel Wilson isn’t charming.

Pianist opens series at St. Patrick

YOUNGSTOWN

St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., will open its monthly concert series with a performance by acclaimed pianist and professor of music at Slippery Rock University, Dr. Nanette Kaplan Solomon. The free concert, which is open to the public, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Dr. Solomon will present “All Mana of Music,” a tribute to the late composer Mana-Zucca.

Free-will offerings will be accepted.

Reception is Sunday for Hoyt exhibit

NEW CASTLE, PA.

A public reception is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hoyt Center for the Arts, 124 E. Leasure Ave., for the Mid-Atlantic Juried Exhibition that runs through Nov. 1. Light refreshments will be served.

Juror is Michael Sullivan, art critic at the Washington Post. He selected 54 works by 35 artists who submitted 277 selections.

Come to the cabaret at history center

YOUNGSTOWN

“Sweet & Pop – A Scrumptious Vaudeville Cabaret” is scheduled Oct. 11 at Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, 325 W. Federal St.

A dessert buffet will be at 7:30 p.m. before the 8:30 show time. Tickets are $30 per person. Proceeds benefit the campaign for the center.
