Alumni association gives service award

NEW SPRINGIFELD

Springfield Local Alumni Association recently honored John Davis Sr. with the 2013 Alumni Appreciation Award for outstanding community service. Davis has served on the Springfield Board of Education, has been a leader in the Lions Club and Springfield Township Baseball Association and New Springfield Church of God. He also has been a volunteer coach for baseball teams for several years.

Ruritans announce contest winners

BERLIN CENTER

Berlin-Ellsworth Ruritan announces the winners of its 2013 baking contest Nov. 2 at Western Reserve High School.

Pie winners were Mary Jo Furman of Berlin Center, elderberry, Kentucky Derby and cherry pies; Rick Truitt of Berlin Center, sweet potato pie; John Ricci of Canfield, Grandma’s old fashioned apple pie; and Karen Grittie of Ellsworth, s’more pie.

In the cake division winners were Linda Vuletich of Berlin Center, brown sugar cake; Joyce Thorpe of Berlin Center, red velvet snow ball cake; and Patrick Franus of Austintown, orange upside-down cake.

The cookie division winner was Kay Capasso of Berlin Center, cinnamon crust brownie.

Darlene Maxim received the Grand Champion award for her peanut butter buckeye brownie cheesecake.

Unique New Year’s planned in Pa. town

HARMONY, PA.

Registration is open for Harmony’s 5K race and 1 Mile Fun Run, part of the borough’s unique afternoon-long Silvester New Year’s Eve party Dec. 31, when the community celebrates its German heritage by welcoming 2014 at 6 p.m. — midnight in Germany.

Runners may register online at www.active.com, or by mail with forms obtained from local merchants and the borough office. Race day registration is available at the Grace Church of Harmony Youth Center on Main Street. Early registrants’ packet pickup will be on Dec. 30 at MoJo Running & Multisport at 667 Castle Creek Drive in Seven Fields.

The afternoon offers a variety of family activities from the races, which raise funds for Harmony’s parks, to the ball drop and fireworks.
