One-car crash kills Trumbull woman

GARRETTSVILLE

A 43-year-old Southington woman was pronounced dead Friday after she crashed into a traffic sign, utility pole and a business sign here at 3:05 p.m.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the victim, Rebecca Proudfoot, was driving a 2000 Toyota Echo westbound on state Route 82 when she went off the north side of the road. She was not wearing a seat belt, the OSHP said.

Troopers from the Ravenna post responded to the crash, which is still being investigated.

2 US attorneys, federal agent are honored for case

Two U.S. attorneys and a federal agent are being awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice for their prosecution of the LSP gang case in federal court.

Being honored with the Director’s Award for Superior Service by a United States Attorney are Robert F. Corts and Daniel J. Riedl. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent John Smerglia was also honored with the United States Attorney’s Award for Distinguished Public Service.

The LSP gang was based on the South Side, and 22 people were convicted of gang-related crimes, including racketeering and drug trafficking. Two leaders of the gang were sentenced to 65 and 37 years in prison, respectively.

Suspect arrested in Friday robbery

Campbell police arrested the suspect in an aggravated robbery just a few hours after the crime occurred Friday evening.

Police would not release his name, saying he’s 18 to 19 years old and in police custody.

About 6 p.m. Friday, a man walked into Tarcy’s Barber Shop on Robinson Road armed with a knife and demanded money. He received only $25.

Police say footprints in the snow led them to the suspect. He will be charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony.

Extra patrols aim to cut fatal crashes

YOUNGSTOWN

The city police department announced recently it has received a grant of more than $36,000 to help pay for overtime for officers to work traffic details aimed at reducing fatal crashes.

Chief Rod Foley said in a news release the city has had 23 fatal accidents since 2011 that were caused by either speed or drunken driving.

He said the department will be working several extra patrols on major roadways in conjunction with the Ohio State Highway Patrol to help reduce those factors.

The federal funds pass through the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Office of Criminal Justice Services and are to be used to focus on traffic-safety areas.

The funds will pay for extra traffic patrols up to September 2014.

Teen-ager is shot in Warren on Friday

WARREN

Rigoberto M. Angel, 18, of South Street, was in the emergency room at ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital on Friday afternoon being treated for wounds suffered in a shooting early Friday. His condition was not available Friday night.

Police found him in the driver’s seat of a car that went off the road in the 800 block of Perkinswood Boulevard Southeast at 3:11 a.m.

Police questioned three juveniles who had been passengers in the car, a Warren police report says.
