Nurses announce 24-hour strike at hospital

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — Nurses at a hospital have planned a one-day strike to protest their lack of a contract.

Members of the Wyoming Valley Nurses Association say they’ll walk off the job at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital on Tuesday morning.

Their contract with Tennessee-based Community Health Systems expired in April. Since then, nurses have been working under the terms of the expired deal.

The health system released a statement Thursday saying it will implement a contingency plan to ensure patient safety.

Union leaders say the company has not bargained in good faith and is ignoring research on safe staffing levels.
