Chorus to present Handel’s ‘Messiah’

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The New Castle Music Club Chorus will give its 73rd annual presentation of Handel’s oratorio “Messiah” at 3 p.m. Sunday at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 2434 Wilmington Road.

Admission is free, but an offering will be taken. For information, go to ncmusicclubchorus,org.

The chorus will be accompanied by organist Kathy Miller, an adjunct faculty at Youngstown State University, and also director/organist at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boardman Congregation Rodef Sholom in Youngstown.

Other featured musicians will be Judy Maher, piano; Sasha Piastro, soprano; Rebecca Toth, alto; Seth Gruber, tenor; Zachary Luchetti, bass; Andrew Erb, trumpet; and Michael Boston, interpreter in sign language.

The performance will be hosted by Northminster pastors Andrew Jillson and Anthony Kladitis, and directed by Harry Cunningham.

The performance is supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, an agency funded by the state and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Historic card decks for sale at Sutliff

The Sutliff Museum is selling decks of historic playing cards that feature 55 photos of Trumbull County buildings and persons. The decks, which make unique gifts, cost $10. A double boxed set is $20.

All 55 cards can be viewed at the museum, which is on the second floor of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW. Hours are 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.

Was museum item looted from Korea?

LOS ANGELES

South Korean officials say a 16th century royal seal in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art may have been stolen out of a shrine in Seoul during the Korean War.

An official at the state-run cultural heritage administration tells The Associated Press that South Korea in May asked the United States to investigate how the gilt bronze seal ended up at LACMA in 2000.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says U.S. officials have confiscated the seal.

The Los Angeles Times says the Korean government has long thought similar signets from the Joseon Dynasty that went missing after the war were stolen by American soldiers.

In a statement, LACMA said there was “credible evidence” that its seal was “removed unlawfully” from Korea.
