Former radio DJ faces sex charge in NJ court

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A former New York City radio personality has appeared in federal court in New Jersey to face charges he tried to transport a 7-year-old girl to the U.S. Virgin Islands for sex.

David Herman has been in custody since his arrest last month. His attorney may seek to have him released on bail, but didn’t do so today.

The 77-year-old Herman was a rock DJ at WNEW in New York. He was handcuffed and wore a yellow prison jumpsuit during today’s court appearance, and appeared to be crying as he looked into the gallery.

If convicted, he could face a life sentence.

Prosecutors say Herman thought he had been corresponding online with a woman about her child but was actually talking to an undercover officer from New Jersey.
