The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown are celebrating two milestones. The Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten marked its 50th anniversary in September, and the 50th anniversary of the opening of the motherhouse at 4250 Shields Road, Canfield, will be observed in December.

The beginning: Since 1874, the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown have ministered in education, hospitals and health care facilities and in parish and outreach programs for the poor and disadvantaged. Sister Angela founded the order in 1535, and the 475th anniversary was marked in 2009. The sisters also minister in social work and as chaplains in area health care, rehabilitation and nursing home facilities, and in area parishes.

Education: Ursuline High School was founded in 1905. Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten began in 1963 in Canfield. Many nuns taught and continue to teach at area schools and at the college level.

Sister Jerome’s Poor: The program aids 150 working families in Youngstown with emergency expenses. Mission College, a recent addition, will provide financial help and mentoring to 12 high school graduates enrolled in college.

Other activities: Spiritual direction and retreats, book club, Walsh University Accelerated Program, Pymatuning Rehab Speech and Hearing Services, labyrinth, prison ministry, pastoral and bereavement counseling and Prayer Shawl Ministry.

New venture: Senior Living will provide 12 apartments for independent seniors of moderate Social Security income.
