Shoplifter found to be carrying gun

BOARDMAN — A Steubenville man is in Mahoning County Jail until his arraignment Tuesday morning after a shoplifting incident at Macy’s in the Southern Park Mall on Saturday.

Robert Goncalves II, 30, is accused of attempting to steal Levi’s jeans from the department store, according to a Boardman police report. Boardman police were dispatched to the store after Goncalves would not cooperate with a loss prevention officer for Macy’s.

Police searched Goncalves after he was taken into custody and found a .32-caliber revolver in his coat.

Police say Goncalves yelled “don’t search my coat.”

Goncalves and three others he was with at the store were shopping for a funeral for a man killed in a homicide.

The firearm was supposed to be used to fire into the air after the funeral in honor of the deceased man, according to police.

Goncalves is charged with robbery, a second-degree felony and carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony.

His arraignment is at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Mahoning County Court Boardman.
