Mount Union approves name for building

The University of Mount Union’s Board of Trustees has approved Gallaher Hall as the name for the university’s health and medical sciences building under construction on Union Avenue.

The building has been named for the late Dr. Charles S. Gallaher. While attending Mount Union, Gallaher was an active brother of Phi Kappa Tau. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in medicine from the University of Louisville.

During World War II, he served as commander in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps in the southwest Pacific. He later worked as staff physician at the Kodak Company and became a surgeon and administrator of Park Ridge Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.

Gallaher served on the Mount Union Board of Trustees from 1956 to 1994 and was honored with the Alumni Service Award in 1994. In 1979, he established the Dr. and Mrs. Charles S. Gallaher Scholarship Fund to be used to assist worthy students.

“Dr. Gallaher was a long-time supporter of Mount Union, both financially and through his work on the board,” said Greg King, vice president for university advancement at Mount Union. “This generous gift will help Mount Union continue to provide outstanding facilities for our students.”

The new facility, being built by Hammond Construction, will house Mount Union’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, as well as possible future health-related programs.
