Boardman hires an aide for the director of instruction

The board of education hired a Title I instructor and administrator to aid the director of instruction for the remainder of the school year.

Effective Dec. 1, Jane Howells will be paid a per diem rate of $18.41 for 116 days of instruction and a per diem rate of $222.61 for 141 days of administration services. The position will be funded entirely through federal funds.

The position is needed because Linda Ross, director of instruction, is increasingly busy with state initiatives such as the implementation of the new learning standards, Superintendent Frank Lazzeri said at the board’s meeting Monday.

With her combination of past classroom and administration experience, Howells will also serve as a role model and coach for teachers and can give support to the Title I tutors, Ross said.

“She’s really the perfect person for the position,” she said.

Also at the meeting, the board recognized the boys’ cross country team for its accomplishments this year. Team members received various distinctions throughout the season. Senior Mark Hadley was state champion and coach John Philips was named Federal League coach of the year.

“It’s truly a group of great guys under a great set of coaches,” said Jared Cardillo, Boardman High School principal. “And they really made Boardman proud. It was very exiting every week to have them come back with a different trophy.”

Phillips noted that most of the team members are seniors and it will be bittersweet to see them leave.

“Cross country became cool at Boardman the last three years, and that’s a tough thing to do,” he said. “It’s because we have a special group of guys.”
