SENIOR SALUTE — BAND EDITION
LANINA SMITH and ANN RIDDLE.
Name: Lanina Smith; Ann Riddle
Instrument: Flag Line; Flute and Piano
Q. When did you start playing your instrument?
A. Smith: I tried out for flag line in my sophomore year.
Riddle: I started playing the piano in the second-grade when my parents surprised me with a piano for Christmas. I started playing the flute when I was in the fourth-grade.
Q. Best memory of being in band/marching band?
A. Smith: My best memory of being with the marching band is when I became flag line captain this year. I also enjoyed the bus trips and dancing to the drum cadences with all of my friends during the games. Another great memory is going to Cedar Point for three years, and I am sure another great memory will be when the band travels to Disney World to perform on New Year’s Eve and marching down Main Street.
Riddle: The very first water balloon fight we had after band camp and going to Cedar Point with the band. I also enjoyed performing in New Orleans at the BCS game was truly amazing because I got to march in the Super Dome and be in a big city with all of my friends.
Q. Why is music important to you?
A. Smith: Music is important because it is a part of everyone in some way. It goes from your heart beat, to a drum beat, and it speaks to me in a way others can’t. Some of my favorite musical numbers were “Party Rock Anthem” because it had the best dance routine; “Thanks for the Memories” had the best overall flag line routine; and “Light-em’ Up” at the end of our “Pop Medley.”
Riddle: Music allows me to express myself in ways I never could with words. Music is something everyone in the world can share. I would have to say one of my favorite musical numbers was “300 Violin Orchestra” because it’s an intense and fun song.
Q. What college do you hope to attend/intended major?
A. Smith: My first choice is Ohio State University with a Major in Biochemistry.
Riddle: I may attend the University of Dayton for Physical Therapy with a minor in music.
