LIBERTY

Plaza Donuts celebrates its 50th year of business in the Youngstown area today with discounts on doughnuts and coffee.

Customers at all three locations will receive 50 percent off when they buy a dozen doughnuts or a coffee and one doughnut.

“It’s a way of appreciating everybody for all the business throughout the years,” said Michael Froomkin, president and co-owner who first joined the business in 1976.

The family-owned business has its roots in Akron, where brothers Irv and Berkeley Froomkin opened several shops in 1960.

Though the pair had a background in the coal industry, they soon found success in the doughnut trade, opening another store in Sharon, Pa., two years later.

In 1963, the family came to Youngstown. The Froomkins opened the Liberty store on Belmont Avenue, where they established their offices.

In the 50 years that followed, the company opened a shop in the Western Reserve Transit Authority bus terminal downtown and another in Boardman on Boardman-Canfield Road.
