Man arrested

CAMPBELL

Police arrested a 55-year-old Third Street man on charges of having open containers in his car and driving with a suspended license.

Shortly after midnight Tuesday, police pulled over James Steven Smith when his SUV failed to stop at the intersection of Jackson Street and Wilson Avenue.

When an officer approached the vehicle, he noticed four mostly empty, open cans of beer on the back-seat floor and one mostly full can of beer on the passenger’s seat. He also could smell the odor of alcohol coming from inside the SUV.

Smith could not provide his driver’s license, registration or proof of insurance, and police soon discovered that his license had been suspended. He was placed under arrest.

The officer also found an open bottle of alcohol in Smith’s jacket pocket. Smith is charged with having open containers, failing to stop at a stop sign, and driving under suspension.

Trumbull County Probate Judge Thomas A. Swift will speak at the World Congress of Adult Guardianship in Washington, D.C., from May 28 to 30, 2014.

A panel of three will give presentations on court models: Dr. Maria Mammeri-Latzel of Berlin, Germany; Atty. Kathy Chew of Los Angeles; and Judge Swift. Judge Swift’s presentation will be on the Trumbull County Senior Court, which he started in 2010.

The Senior Court, the only one of its type in the United States, diverts municipal and county court cases for people age 60 or older away from formal court proceedings.

The World Congress on Adult Guardianship is an international gathering of those involved in guardianship.
