Third-grade students and their families participated in a night of math fun during Family Math Night Oct. 22 at Union Elementary School.
The Supplyroom Educational Materials provided the education games for the evening, including ShapeOmetry, a visual perception, spacial reasoning game; Money Monsters, a game dealing with money and Double Shutter, a math dice game using addition and subtraction.
Sharon Blumental from the SupplyRoom said family math nights are important.
“They make math more enjoyable for everyone,” said Blumental. “Kids don’t realize how fun math can be, and during Family Math Night they get to do math and spend time with their families.”
The students enjoyed the games.
“My favorite game was Double Shutter,” said Jonah Zuzan.
Representatives from PNC Bank came to help the students use place-value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. The students, placed in teams, spun a wheel with different monetary values. The students had to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
Participants enjoyed pizza and math together in a fractions activity. They used pizza pies to develop an understanding of fractions as numbers.
“They’re learning skills they will use throughout their life,” said Missy Kountz, third-grade teacher.
