Ohio man charged with slaying of Pearl Harbor survivor

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Prosecutors say they won’t seek the death penalty for a northeast Ohio man accused in the 2007 slaying of an 87-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor.

The Repository of Canton reports that 33-year-old Chester Crank was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday. He’s facing aggravated murder and other charges in the 2007 fatal shooting of 87-year-old Bennie Angelo.

Crank was arrested in late September after police say he admitted to killing Angelo in tape-recorded conversations with an undercover informant. Police believe he started a fire to cover up the slaying.

His defense attorney had challenged the undercover recordings.

Dennis Barr, an assistant Stark County prosecutor, declined to comment on why the death penalty won’t be sought for Crank.
