346 veteran’s ID cards issued

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County Recorder’s office has issued 346 of its new plastic military veteran’s photo identification cards since it began issuing them Monday, according to Noralynn Palermo, county recorder.

Palermo also said her office has received hundreds of telephone calls from veterans inquiring about obtaining the wallet-sized cards.

Because her colleagues in the Trumbull and Columbiana county recorder’s offices aren’t issuing the cards, Palermo said her office will issue them to veterans residing in those counties in addition to those living in Mahoning County.

To receive a card, a veteran must show a DD 214 discharge form, pay $1 and show a certified birth certificate, Social Security card, U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs identification card or any other ID issued by the federal government.

The new cards may be shown when using U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs medical facilities, applying for a job or a VA mortgage, or seeking veterans’ preference at the housing authority or veterans’ discounts from area merchants.

The Mahoning County Recorder’s Office, 120 Market St., is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
